CNC Laser Engraving & Cutting 6 mm Custom Acrylic Award

Let’s take a closer look at the last one shall we?

First step is CNC laser engraving a selected piece of 6 mm thick acrylic we had in the shop. Acrylic is a really nice material to work with, it’s so versatile across so many applications!

When CNC laser engraving acrylic, there is little to no risk of fire but care should still be given when working with a petroleum based product that’s undergoing some vaporization.

When I designed this award as a sample display for CNCROi.com, I wanted something that was easy enough for anybody to design (it’s just text!) and showcased the precision our Austrian Trotec Laser has. You could just as easily replicate this project on just about any material out there from aluminium (raw, powder coated or anodized), wood, laminate, organics… the list never ends.

Now for the cool part, when engraving acrylic, there is a fine acrylic powder that develops over the project, this is easily removed but what’s neat is looking at the CNC laser cut through the powder afterwards. It’s almost like it’s cleaning the surface!

After all the “inner” parts are cut through, it’s time to cut out the outside so this “we build amazing custom awards” award can be liberated from the sheet of acrylic.

After a quick cleaning (still a bit of powder on the letters below) the award is pretty much done.
