Custom Animal Shapes: 1/4″ (6 mm) Plywood Designs 0001-0011
The first of many upcoming salvos into the custom animal shapes library I’m developing at CNCROi.com has begun. First batch are plywood designs of bears, seal, scorpion and giraffes.
Today we’ll focus on the first 11 custom shapes to be released in our shapes library which you can find under “buy online”, these are cut out of plywood measuring 1/4 inch or 6 mm in thickness.
Before any engraving or cutting can occur, we first mask the surface, in this case the top and not the bottom as we can quickly sand the bottom that nobody will ever see while we want to keep the upper surface free of smoke and debris during CNC laser production.
The first pass of our laser focused on engraving details, I designed these custom animal shapes to have two passes, one that’s fine with lots of details and the other cutting out the entire shape a few mm or fractions of an inch further away from the engraving lines.
Of course, we work across many budgets and timelines and applications so this is an optional feature that we can offer. That’s the advantage of on-demand production, we can customize the output to match your input (design files) in not just material but size and style too!
CNCROi.com can also customize these application wise, so if you want wooden mahogany business cards in the shape of a polar bear or Corian coasters in the shape of a seal with matching custom inserts, yeah, we do that!
I am planning on having several thousand custom shapes in our library and making extensive project files to help the general consumer get something totally custom to their needs yet still in a manner that’s easy to order. That’s why we don’t have any pricing for our library items (we can go full custom as well) as what we build will be dictated by YOU.
There is quite a huge variety of capabilities built-into our shop, thanks to our American ShopBot CNC router and Austrian Trotec CNC industrial laser with two tubes of power (one CO2, the other fiber).
In the above image, you can see the extra detail of fur that would be lost if we just cut out the silhouette as/is instead of going with double pass process, again, customized to your budget and materials, if this was black, you wouldn’t see this while if it was a high contrasting color, adding even more details may be in the cards.
As for sizing, we could have easily made these small enough to fit in an envelope or “life-size” with full 3D dimensional support so that it can stand upright!
The upper surface of the masking is getting dirty, which is fine, because that’s ON THE MASK and not the surface of the plywood, which would need to be sanded to remove.
Our machine repeatability is also second to none, meaning if we cut out one giraffe or 10 thousand, they will all be identical and due to our realtime approach to production, we could also customize each of those 10 thousand giraffes with unique identifiable information such as a name or randomly generated alphanumeric.
As our industrial wide-format laser powers through this plywood, the custom animal shapes are coming into existence, soon to be released from their plywood binds.
The cutting is done, the engraving and cutting passes each did the trick and all that’s left to do is removing the protective masking so that these custom animal shapes can begin a new life.
After the board is removed, still with masking on, you can really see the extent of the soot and burning that our laser produced, we control fire so this is no surprise and the masking did a wonderful job protecting these custom animal shapes.

On these bears, you can see how the extra laser pass to add details adds a lot to the shape but keep in mind that if you plan on painting these, you might as well have us skip this step as you most likely won’t see it and go to MDF instead of plywood.
We can also make custom awards using these shapes or any combination of quite easily and that can also include custom inlays.
The material combinations are also endless, so we can make inlays using a mix of acrylic, laminates, woods and thin veneers.
We are also able to make custom stencils out of any of these shapes, using either your shapes or logos or ours (in library or from your photographs or digital files).
