We do lots of custom Corian work here at CNCROi.com, today, we’ll review a custom coaster we cut earlier and demonstrate Corian paint filling after laser engraving into it.
I’ve written extensively about our custom Corian capabilities here in the shop, I suggest you watch this video as well and if you are wondering about the Corian color options available, CLICK HERE TO SEE THEM.
And if you are wondering how this coaster specifically was manufactured by CNCROi.com, check this video out too!
Now that we have that out of the way, let’s focus on adding a white snowflake to this darker custom Corian coaster. The shape can be anything as well as the engraving and paint filling color. We offer you COMPLETE FLEXIBILITY when it comes to Corian and this can be extended to any other material as well, from wood to acrylic, polycarbonate to cement. Corian paint filling is custom base material options through to final color choices.
The first step towards making Corian paint filling coasters after our CNC router has cut out the shape is masking the surface, this isn’t absolutely necessary but speeds up the process after the paint filling.
We have a powerful Austrian wide-format industrial laser, so even if the Corian coasters isn’t perfectly flat, it makes no difference for this application. The masking is incredibly thin and isn’t really necessary but it just makes clean-up easier.
After the design is sent to our industrial laser, it begins engraving it right away. Again, the bunching-up of the wrapping paper underneath in the photo makes no difference for this material, it maybe raises it 1/64 inch on one side vs the other. If this was stainless steel, yes, this would be an issue but Corian is very easy to work with.
The durability of Corian for custom paint filled coasters is incredible, it takes heat pretty well, can be left indoors or out and although it’s plastic based, can be re-sanded later and re-paint filled should it get too dirty or grungy.
We’ve made a host of products using Corian, from custom cutting boards and coasters to signage, it’s really a wonderful material to work with across lots of applications. Corian paint filling is also a seamless process that we’ve done endless times, and the results always look fantastic!
Having a top of the line CNC laser is very important with Corian because any deviation in power produces an inconsistent result in both depth and edge quality. We are vaporizing plastic here, it’s very fickle when it comes to laser power variations. Corian paint filling hides some of this but if you are going to do a job, do it right the first time and the right way!
In this case, we are doing two passes, just to get that extra consistent depth, we could have done it in one pass but sometimes slow and steady produces better results than trying to over-power the material. There are lots of variations possible, we just do with what works best for us.
Corian produces sparks, flames and all bunch of wonderful fireworks in our industrial CNC laser, these custom paint filled Corian coasters are no different, we have powerful extraction and compression systems with our industrial laser so it’s no problem for us.
After the laser engraving is done, we have an awesome snowflake, we could inlay this with wood, acrylic but in this case, paint filling is what we want to demonstrate.
We can also engrave the edge or within the inlay if you wanted, so for instance, a wall plaque can have motivational words going along the outer edge or we can make a bevel or whatever kind of ornamentation you desire. The edges don’t need to be 90 degrees either, every aspect of this simple coaster can be customized to your branding.
Here you can see the depth we achieved, it’s about 1/8th inch and consistent across the board. There are lots of custom design possibilities, your corporate logo or design has to be optimized to the material at hand though, we will handle that in the prototyping stage here at CNCROi.com.
Adding a bit of paint will really make this detail shine out far more than leaving it as-is in this Corian paint filling coaster. The paint can be any color you want but generally, a contrasting color to the base Corian looks best, so you don’t want to use black paint with black Corian or white paint with white Corian.
And voila, the final result, smooth, consistent and viewable from a distance and sharp in detail close-up. The edges are sharp and Corian is an incredibly strong material, if this was made out of wood, there could be some breakage inside the snow flake with regular use but with Corian, it’s dramatically harder.
We’ve done a lot of work with Corian paint filling, whatever your needs, odds are that we’ve done it from custom corporate Corian gifts for employees to custom Corian awards and wall plaques. Essentially, anything made out of wood could also be made out of Corian.
Taking a look at it from another angle, you can see that the added depth also looks great when the edges are paint filled, the deeper we go, the more pronounced this becomes but also costs double so it’s a fine balance between budget and results when it comes to custom Corian paint filling coasters and production.
