We needed some new hangers here at the CNCROi.com shop so I decided to design some of my own and share with you guys how the cutting went.
I had some clear 1/4 inch (6 mm) acrylic lying around looking to be used-up for something awesome so I decided transform a that boring sheet into something useful.
The acrylic was custom CNC laser cut using our industrial wide format Trotec Speedy 400 flexx, designed and born in Austria! The acrylic cutting table on the other hand, doesn’t come from such an exotic locale, I got that in Canada which is where CNCROi.com is set-up.
After the engraving, our CNC laser went about outlining all the details in the custom acrylic hanger, this increased production time but the result produces clear and crisp edges that make this stand-out even more than otherwise possible with only an engraving pass.
Looking at it closer, you can see how it re-melts the acrylic so everything is crispy!
It’s these little details that we put into our design process and followed through with our industry leading CNC laser that puts CNCROi.com in a league of its own when it comes to custom CNC laser services. Our focus is on QUALITY output, even if it does come at the sacrifice of some production speed.
After the outlines were touched-up by the CNC laser, the inside parts of the hanger were cut out. This is to make sure that everything cuts perfectly inside through to out. I’ve designed several hundred projects far more complicated than this simple shape, I’ve learned how to do things the best way and this is one of them. There are no books for this stuff (yet… coming soon though!)
Then the outsides are cut. Everything is perfect as it should be! Acrylic can be a very dangerous material to have in a lesser CNC laser by an untrained professional operator, luckily, this isn’t a problem as everything is optimized from design to the shop layout to prevent issues before they arise!
Taking a look at this from another angle, you see some fire but nothing that our air compressor can’t put out and extraction can’t suck out. The fun part about CNC laser cutting transparent acrylic is you get to see what would normally be hidden behind materials.
Once everything is cut, it’s time to evaluate the results. The thin film on the underside is what gave it a slight green color which comes right off after cutting.
Our table might look burned but at least our acrylic isn’t! There is a few marks here and there but they are on the masking we applied, not the finished piece. This is easily removed and voila, the spectacular results speak for themselves!
What are some applications for this? Well, from corporate branding to wedding favors and even personal use, custom hangers are a great way to get a message out regardless of location and unlike a lot of the crap you see being given away by the boat load at trade shows, this will actually be used for years to come.
I’ve decided to change-up these videos a bit, I’ll start doing some small intros to show the finished piece with some better scale, here’s the first of many to come! I’m still very much organizing things so I’ll do as much as I can, these projects are fun, the laser programming is fun and the results are even more fun. Fun all around!
