Custom Designed and Cut Wooden Cake Toppers
Designing and CNC laser cutting out wooden cake toppers (in this case, we can make them out of any material as well) is a growing product line at CNCROi.com.
In this weeks blog post, we’ll take a look at two more designs, we do these in-house so anything you want, we design just for you and ship it out to you. The first step for us is the plywood selection, it has to have as few flaws as possible, we generally work around knots or other issues and with all our clients, we show them pictures before, during and after production so they know exactly what they will be receiving. Surprises have their place, just not when it comes to custom production for either party.
After its chosen, we mask it, this helps speed production because very little sanding is required after the laser engraving process. This savings in time makes your bill a little lighter and allows us to produce more throughout the day. It’s a win/win.
After masking, it’s time to engrave the plywood with the wording we want to put on this custom wooden cake topper.
After the engraving is finished, we do a secondary pass onto the words that make-up the laser cut cake topper, this helps to add contrast to the finished piece. We can do this because we have a highly precise Austrian wide-format CNC laser, it’s incredibly accurate and will always hit its mark, this case, within a fraction of a mm to create a darker border around the letters.
After the outlining is complete, it’s time to cut out the inside parts followed by the outside parts, working our way “in to out” allows everything to maintain spec, if we went the other way around, there would be slight movement in the custom wooden cake topper during production which would cause inaccurate results.
Absolute precision at its best! We are even cutting out small little details within the letters to give it that added complexity that would be incredibly difficult to achieve using any other technology on the market. Try doing something like this using a scroll saw!
In this case, we used plywood as it was sitting around in the shop looking for an upgrade in its social status, we’ve made these in a variety of materials from laminate to acrylic, veneer to stainless steel (where volumes make sense due to high production costs).
The final step is cutting out the finished custom wedding cake topper from the piece of plywood.
The results show how much smoke and resin deposited over the piece, imaging sanding this off every surface on a material as delicate as plywood! Now you know why we mask these front and back!
These resins are very sticky, they get stuck in sand paper, rendering it useless and only spreading the resin.
Taking the mask off and you see the dramatic results on this custom wooden cake topper.
You can see the absolute precision we achieved as well. The letter and more importantly, the outlines, are absolutely perfect and exactly where they should be.
And the back, totally clean without any marks or damage on this custom wedding cake topper.

The designs that WE (you and I) come-up with can be as fancy or simple as you want, let’s do a simpler design now of two lightning bolts merging. Anybody can make one of anything, try having lightning hit twice and that’s where you see precision at its best.
Like the previous custom wooden cake topper, this one is also engraved first.
Just to increase the level of difficulty on this, the custom wedding cake topper was done at an angle, it’s easy to do something straight with a laser, but the precision should technically work at ALL ANGLES with a good machine, as you’ll see, we can engrave and cut these at any angle for optimal sheet use without any problems at all.
Cutting out the inside part of this custom wooden cake topper, you see the same smoke and resin deposits as with the previous one we did in this blog post. It really builds-up quickly along cut lines as unlike CNC laser engraving, we are vaporizing straight through the material instead of just the surface, releasing a lot more dust and debris as a result.
After doing a secondary pass for outlining the text and cutting out the one inside part, it’s time to cut out the entire custom wooden cake topper from the piece of plywood.
As you can see, there is plenty of clearance with our industrial wide-format Austrian CNC laser, so doing work that has elevations isn’t an issue at all for us.
Once the work is done, the laser goes back to its beginning position and we can finally see the completed double-lightning design with masking.
Taking the plywood away, you can see what we are left with with this wooden cake topper.
Taking the masking off, it’s quite a contrast, all that resin is now gone.
Looking at the engraving more closely, you can see how the grain proves this was done at a different angle yet we enjoy exactly the same precision and finish as the previous custom wooden cake topper done straight-on.
Looking in even closer, the engraving by our industrial CNC laser is even and consistent, which is pretty incredible considering plywood is anything but even and consistent.
Again, the back of this custom wooden cake topper is perfect. Why do we take as much care on the back as the front? Well, regardless of what angle the cake will be at, somebody will notice the back and who wants to eat wedding cake from a dirty, smokey and resin infused piece of wood?
Front looks awesome of course, here’s a bit of a different light to help highlight the depth a bit more accurately.
