Custom Dog Tag Annealing and Marking (part 2 of 2)

Two days ago, CNCROi.com made a blog post about making the jig we are about to use to for today’s post, custom fiber mark and anneal dog tags.

You may have noticed the appearance of a bright yellow angle ruler recently in our CNCROi.com blog posts, this is to help demonstrate scale in our videos and photos… it’s hard to make this out on the black our Trotec Laser table has by default for these purposes.

I’ve modified these tags heavily since we first began making them for sample packs, cutting production time by 2/3rds and hence increasing the ROI by the same amount! I’m always looking for ways of making things more efficient in the shop not only for ourselves but our customers too!

In this case, just looking at this tag, you know what we did to it!

Looking at the CNC laser head of our Austrian Trotec Speedy 400 flexx, you’ll see a blue lens is being used, this is our fiber lens – it produces AWESOME results and provides incredible clearance for our work… the advantage of this is if you have an awkward piece, we can fiber mark or anneal it without fear of our head banging into it!

Annealing is done! Let’s take a look a little closer.

Awesome! The reason why we did the annealing first is that depending on time constraints, sometimes it’s best to do the longer stuff first and quick stuff later. The annealing of these tags, even with less text, takes far longer than fiber marking the other side with more content.

Removing the 304SS dog tags is easy, just flip the jig over and sometimes, use the punch holes to push the tags that don’t want to be fiber marked! We’ve also cut down on the vertical use of this process as well, increasing production speed!

Once the dog tags are done being fiber marked, the next step is taking a closer look.

They look awesome! I pushed them, in this case, right to the edge so they can be part of a key chain yet still be clearly visible.

There you have it, that’s how CNCROi.com CNC laser fiber anneals and marks 121 custom dog tags. I’ll use this jig for a little while but probably need to make one holding many more tags in the near future for some mining projects we are quoting… more on that later.

Maybe your application calls for custom tags that are anodized aluminium, acrylic or even wood, we can make a custom jig and the process is essentially the same. Watch the video!
