Custom LED Acrylic Sign: CNC Laser Engraving & Cutting

I’ve had this piece of acrylic in the shop for a while not doing much as it was scratched-up so I decided it was time to make a custom LED sign out of it!

When I’m making sample projects, I like to test things out in different way to see what the results will look like. In this case, I kept the protective plastic covering on the scratched acrylic just to see if I’d find a difference vs taking it off as I normally do.

I made the exact same design at almost the same size earlier out of laminate with a plywood backing which you can watch the video here.

So it’s fun to see the same design used for a completely different signage related application, using custom LEDs allow so many options.

The design and visual possibilities using custom LED signage mixed with other materials is truly amazing. Now we can introduce a whole new level of color and effects options to our customer base.

After the engraving process is complete on this custom LED signage, we move onto cutting it out of the scrap acrylic. In this case, the acrylic is 6 mm or 1/4 inch thick.

If you look at the custom Egyptian bank we made last week, integrating custom LEDs into it would be easy as long as it was designed to handle it – not something that’s difficult to do.

Let’s say you wanted us to make a custom whiteboard (or blackboard) using LED lights to make it stand out from the wall, yep, we can do that too!

Again, the applications for this custom LED signage are limitless! The only thing we need to assure is that there is a design optimized to dissipate the heat created by the LEDs and a room for the custom electronics.

Once complete, you can see how great the acrylic looks laser engraved and cut to spec. As the lighting is “head on”, you don’t see the scratches in this scrap piece of acrylic but if you look closely at the video, you’ll see them in this custom LED signage.

It goes without saying, we’d use something without scratches in it to make your custom LED signage but even with material flaws, you can see how spectacular this sign looks and it’s also incredibly right.
