In this case, we’ll make custom wall text and art using whitewood, its lightweight (something good for walls and shipping costs), thick (which provides nice contrast to the white surface as the edges are laser cut) and best of all, a relatively inexpensive material abundantly available!
The custom design I made to showcase just a glimpse of what we’ve done for customers and businesses far and wide would be impossible to accomplish using any other type of machinery in a cost-effective manner. Custom wall text and art using wood is great because it can be easily painted and further modified by the designer or end-user.
Wood, over say making this out of stainless steel is also a lot easier to work with across a wide range of applications where custom wall text and art is needed. This could have been further stained, sanded or modified in an endless ways and using a simple nail or double-sided tape on the back for adhesion to a wall is easy.
As for the resolution, although we have a thousand DPI available to us, we generally custom fabricate wall text and art from 333 DPI through 600 DPI. The reason is that there is no point in using a higher DPI than the material can handle.
For instance, if we were doing this exact same design on Cherry or Oak, we can go at a far higher resolution as the material is denser than say, basswood which has a relatively low density. Whitewood has roughly the same density as Pine by the way, so we can use the same resolution of 500 DPI comfortably.
The reason why the surface of this custom wall text and art whitewood is looking burned and fragmented is due to the fact that we applied a protective mask onto the surface to lessen the amount of smoke stains on the surface. Although easily sanded, this reduces the amount of sanding needing at the end of the day.
Our Austrian industrial wide-format laser is also burning, though with a high degree of focus and precision, into this material, hence why you see the contrast between the engraved and not engraved areas of this custom wall text and art.

After extensive custom CNC laser engraving across the surface of this whitewood custom wall text and art, it was time to start cutting out the inside followed by the outside elements. The steps are the same whether this is for a wall or an architectural divider by the way.
Don’t worry about all that burned out resin and stains on the surface, all of it is laying on a thin piece of masking paper, when that’s removed, most of that is also removed, leaving a very bright, clear surface that our customers have come to expect from CNCROi.com!
To give you an idea of scale, those thin lines going across making-up the question mark on this custom wall text and art have about half a mm in burned detail between them which is about 1/32″. That’s the kind of incredible precision and quality we can achieve on your custom design!
Our industrial laser is now just cutting out the outer part of this custom wall text and art, although the “scrap board” looks great, I wanted this sign to come out and show lots of holes and angled work, and the only way to do that properly is to cut the entire shape out with our laser!
Although I showcase lots of 2D work on CNCROi.com‘s blog, this could have been made 3D, meaning it can stand or be made so big you could have walked in and around it with ease and maybe even integrate shelves to hold things in it!
Make no mistake, we are producing some fire throughout this process of making a custom wall text and art, you can see some of it in the image above, it’s hidden on the underside but it’s still there! If you think about it, CNCROi.com gets paid to use fire to make our customer’s dreams come true… how awesome is that?!?!?
Now that the custom wall text and art is done being engraved and cut, you can see how “rough” it looks but keep in mind, you see most of these issues on the masking which won’t be part of the final design and as this is wood, we’ll be able to sand this no problem!
One final look, you can see how precise our industrial laser is, the part we wanted comes right out of the part we don’t on this whitewood, this requires an incredibly precise machine, and we bought the absolute best in the market, a Trotec Speedy 400 flexx!
Just look at the incredible precision we got after sanding this down, everything is clear and exactly where it was meant to be on this custom wall text and art.
