Although we could have made this out of anything, from stainless steel through Corian or wood veneer through laminate, MDF is a quick way to test out a design that we do with some of our customers in order to proof a design before going into real production.

We are CNC laser engraving these MDF royal crowns first to create additional accuracy in this design, creating optimal tool pathing and processes is half the job when it comes to making accurate results for our customers to spec.

For instance, cutting these crowns first and then engraving them may predispose them to moving ever so slightly, so you’d see a very light deviation to the left, right or overall in the design. This is avoided by engraving first then engraving these royal crowns.

This isn’t the only thing to keep under consideration when it comes to using our Austrian dual-sourced industrial wide-format laser. We can move the head of this laser incredibly fast but going too fast means the laser doesn’t have time to engrave deep enough into the base material.

Another factor that must be carefully balanced is power to speed ratios, using too much power while going too slow means we are cutting instead of engraving. As a result, we do lots of material testing when it comes to materials we aren’t familiar with or the customer requires a specific spec on a material that we have worked with previously.

The laser light blurring you see in the video and these photos is just some smoke that built-up on the under-surface of our protective acrylic laser top. We had just done a big production of custom polycarbonate parts and the smoke built-up on the covering and needed some cleaning so our camera was having trouble focusing on the proper areas.

The steps you’ve seen thus far are essentially the same regardless of the material we are CNC laser engraving or cutting. CNC processes don’t really deviate that much regardless of whether it’s done with a waterjet, plasma cutter or any other CNC machines short of a 3D printer.
