Pine Sign Updating: CO2 Laser Engraving

I made this sign a while back so it’s time for a pine sign updating onto the backside in the CNCROi.com shop.

Before we progress too far along this pine sign updating, take a look at the previous video so you see how the original pine sign was made.

All we are doing in this blog post is the backside of this older custom pine sign.

The advantage of updating a sign over completely remaking a new one is that we are optimally using materials at hand and that it’s already cut to the correct dimensions.

This time around, onto the back side of this pine sign, CNCROi.com will engrave a bit deeper with a refreshed design.

The old design was fine, but I recently changed the tag line of the company and figured I might as well update the sign to reflect that.

This design is a bit more similar to my older sign that I whitewashed a while ago to give it an antique look, I like the palm tree and the smaller words underneath so continued along that path.

It’s fun looking at these videos, although not much changes in the shop week to week, when extended over a period of two and a half years, the changes really do build-up quickly!

As you can see, there is still plenty of table where this custom pine sign updating is taking place.

CNCROi.com has made lots of signs, with pass-through capabilities, our biggest wooden sign thus far was 12 ft (almost 4 meters) long!

We also have plenty of vertical clearance, so even large and wide and yes, heavy pieces, can be custom CNC laser engraved, whether we are making a new custom sign or updating an old one, CNCROi.com can make it happen!

How much vertical clearance does our Austrian CNC industrial laser have?

Check this video out where we engraved the top of a wooden log! We can also open up the front and back of our machine, hence being able to do custom BIG work.

I decided this time around to add a slight engraved outline to our company name, it just helps to emphasize it more while keeping the details relatively simple.

Taking a closer look at the vaporization of the pine sign updating CNCROi.com is performing.

Our laser is fast and powerful, that bright line is the instant transition of a layer of wood into smoke!

The nice thing about engraving REAL wood is that the grain detail is “free” regardless of what design is applied onto it.

For instance, you can already see how the pine board is coming out and the darkening effect of our industrial laser onto the vaporized wood really gives it a lot of extra detail.

Large details or small sharp ones, they all come out great with this sign updating.

Notice the depth is really starting to shine, having a lot of power under the hood means CNCROi.com can do in one pass what would typically take several to achieve.

You can also see the smoke building-up from the vaporized wood and resins found within it on the upper part of the sign updating details.

This is why we generally mask wood when working with it, so that this doesn’t build-up to heavily and thus, far easier to sand.

This sign is being custom CNC laser engraved at 600 DPI though we ca go much higher, it just takes longer and the “win” in extra resolution really isn’t worth the additional cost in time and energy to produce.

Here’s an idea of what we can do, resolution wise, on even the smallest of wooden parts, the same can be achieved on metal, acrylics and lamacoids if the material density supports it.

This custom sign updating is almost finished, the depth of the full bigger letters achieved by engraving them is the same as the faint outline around them.

CNCROi.com doesn’t leave anything to chance, even slim and unnoticed details like a few pieces of grass under the palm tree get engraved just like the more noticeable details.

The sign is now done being engraved, this isn’t the end of the sign updating though, it’s time to review the work and take things another step forward, sanding.

You can now see the sign nicely place onto the custom downdraft table that I designed and actually laser cut using the same machine this sign updating was done onto.

Watch the design through build video of this custom downdraft table made using MDF.

It’s heavy, it’s resilient and has sanded A LOT OF THINGS!

Before doing the sanding, take a look at the incredible resolution achieved on this simple piece of pine board.

Knots are details you either love or hate on work, let us know ahead of time your preference and we’ll be able to follow it.

Our industrial laser is easily capable of producing signs of all sizes, shapes and engraving detail you require.

From sharp details to “hot iron” burned look, CNCROi.com could have updated this sign in half a dozen ways by using different settings.

Now that this sign updating is completely sanded, you can see the details more clearly that were under the smoke and vaporized resins around the top of the letters and palm tree.

A quick blast of compressed air, the full beauty of this pine sign came out fantastic!

This sign updating is very much worthy of being displayed for another year of videos on our CNCROi.com wall.

As for the cutting detail, CNCROi.com can go as nuts as the engraving, check out this video to show you what’s possible!

Taking a closer look at the finished sign updating, you can see the palm leaves are sharp and extremely finely detailed.

As for the letters, you can see again, the very fine detail our Austrian CNC laser can achieve.

Notice the roundness of the “O” and the top of the apex in “A”.

Here’s another angle of this pine sign updating, you can follow the grain both engraved and not touched by the laser, it’s this level of consistency that’s hard to achieve any other way.

Of course, knots always tend to show-up and the worse random places on a wooden board, I could have designed around it but in this case, it’s a nice thing to remind customers about when it comes to custom production.

If you are wondering about the ways of producing an infill around text onto just about any material, check out this State of California sample we made at CNCROi.com.

Here’s what the resin and smoke looks like on a piece of sand paper that was relatively fresh before any work was done on this sign updating.

Alternatively, we can also use other equipment to produce other unique details for signage.

The flexibility CNCROi.com offers you is literally endless across a range of technologies.

Here’s the finished sign updating for this round, next time around, we’ll have to totally sand or plane the surface so that we can go about doing this all over again, year after year.

That’s the nice thing about wood, it can be almost endlessly refreshed!
