Acrylic War Game Ruler

Making a custom war game ruler is no different than producing corporate gift rulers or novelty rulers, just the information and design are different.

For this specific project, CNCROi.com used 1/8″ 3 mm thick blue transparent acrylic, it looks cool and is the color the customer wanted.

The nice thing about transparent acrylic is that CNCROi.com keeps stock of a variety of colors for quick turnarounds but also lots of options when it comes to making your own war game ruler just how you want it.

Yep, CNCROi.com also makes bathroom keys using acrylic, in this case, quarter inch clear with custom branding.

You’ll notice the masking is removed off the top layer (not bottom) of the acrylic, this is because we are engraving and cutting them in one step, rather than cut them all to size, then align them individually with the laser engraving process happening shortly thereafter.

Key chains are another wonderful use of acrylic, it’s relatively durable and looks great over time.

Coasters are a great use of acrylic as well, but they aren’t if you plan on using them outdoors, as they don’t weight very much, use indoors.

I really like working with transparent acrylic, it literally takes on any room you put it in so it’s never out of place, the color is borderline “neon” as well, so it won’t get easily lost, unlike a lot of rulers I have at CNCROi.com.

The fire you see in the image below is caused by the melted acrylic, the laser is igniting the petroleum in the acrylic, causing a fire, but not to worry, it’s a controlled fire and the black soot that would be on the underside isn’t happening on the surface of the actual war game ruler because it’s settling on the masking instead.

The major advantage of using our CNC laser to produce these war game rulers is that there is no hold-down required, unlike our two CNC routers in the shop, this means the production is done in a contactless fashion, making this a lot easier and accurate.

We produce a lot of novelty shapes using acrylic as well, here’s some camels we produced for a customer in England.

The white powder you see on the surface of the war game ruler is actually just acrylic dust, it’s formed when CNCROi.com is laser engraving the surface, what is removed, has to settle somewhere as it doesn’t all vaporize away.

This acrylic powder comes right off though, it doesn’t adhere to the acrylic surface at all, I generally just wash them off lightly with a dry cloth so I don’t scratch the surface.

These war game rulers are now finished, you can see the layout leaves very little to waste, it’s not just smart production but also environmentally friendly to not throw away this stuff, even if it’s for recycling, if at all possible.

CNCROi.com performed several engraving and cutting passes of this low production volume of war game rulers, the reason is simple, I’m in no rush and prefer to control tightly production rather than ty to get as much done as possible by cutting corners.
