We not only know the difference between an angle grinder and a JPG file but also SolidWorks and Inventor! When using a CNC laser (we have a router as well), it’s important to have an operator and business owner who understand the challenges you are facing, the file formats and software possibilities out there and how to export them in the most optimal format for the best results.
My background is in 3D animation (self-taught), having used 3DS Max for over a decade along with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and the list goes on… and recently CorelDraw and a few other auxiliary programs to boot. What I’m trying to explain is that in the CNC business, software is the starting point where the G-Code that will be used to generate your tool paths comes from. For me, I design in 3DS Max, export to AI and then import that into CorelDraw. It’s convoluted but works… a similar approach to what many of our clients end-up doing. All our paths are different, the result is the same, a tool path.
The advantage CNCROi.com has is that we totally understand the design process from quoting (we do a lot of that too) to design, prototyping and deliverables in both digital and physical form. We can take over at any stage of the process if you are more comfortable using your methods like sketching on napkins through to generating vector files from your CAD software.
Why is having this background knowledge in software so important? Well, there may be 20 ways to skin a cat but only a few of those will produce a good quality fur. Running a production environment with CNC machines interfacing with software, hardware and the list goes on with endless material selections may seem daunting for some of our customers but we are used to it… we actually thrive with limitless options rather than being oppressed by it.
We design our own stuff as well as for customers, to our specs or a customers, makes no difference to us. If you are a fashion designer or artist looking to try something neat, we are right onboard with you! So far, I’ve run CNCROi.com for well over a year but my background goes two decades, most “recently” publishing books that other CNC laser, 3D and router owners use to learn how to design for them. So, I’m as much a designer as anybody else.

Like anything else, there is a lot of work that goes on here in the shop from electron shuffling to scrap bins but what is important at the end of the day, above all us, is our reputation as a custom CNC shop.
