Ash House Number Sign: Custom Live Edge
Transforming a raw slab wood into a custom Ash house number sign requires many steps using our CNC router, CNC laser and a lot of power and hand tools, here’s how CNCROi.com made it!
The first step towards making a custom Ash house number sign is to flatten both sides so that the warped piece of Ash lumber is both clean and ready to be laser engraved (in this case).
Flattening an Ash slab takes a bit of time initially but it saves a tremendous amount of legwork and sanding time down the line and produces a superior finish when it comes to completing this custom Ash house number sign.
Compare the top photo to this one here, you wouldn’t even think it was the same piece of Ash, all the years of grime and Sun bleaching are removed.
Not into wood? CNCROi.com can make just about any material into a custom house number sign, including Corian and other hard or soft surface materials.
The next step is flipping the Ash slab over so that CNCROi.com can flatten the other side, this makes sticking it on a wall a lot easier as you are dealing with an Ash house number sign that’s parallel to the wall rather than full of bumps.
After the Ash slab is flattened and cleaned-up on both sides, it goes straight from the bit into the fire, our Austrian wide-format industrial CNC laser will now engrave the details that will transform this piece of wood into a custom Ash house number sign.
When it comes to wood species, CNCROi.com can make a custom house number sign out of Cedar, Maple, Ash, Walnut, Oak or anything else you want.
The precision of our industrial CNC laser is incredible, we could pass over the same area endless times and each time, it would pass over that same area.
If you notice, there was nothing added to the Ash house number sign, other than a protective masking to reduce the amount of sanding required after the laser engraving process, what you see is charcoal being made which will naturally produce the contrast you see appearing on the Ash wood.
If all you want is a house number, CNCROi.com can make that as well, in this case, the custom house numbers were made out of wood with a white paint fill.
You can see some smoke stains and settling along the edges of the custom CNC laser engraving, that’s why a mask was applied ahead of time, it just makes clean-up all the more easier.
After one pass is complete on this Ash house number sign, it’s time to go over it again to darken the contrast and create a little more depth for the shadows to dwell within.
When it comes to Cedar house number signage, the contrast is a bit different from Ash but it still looks great and we get the same amount of precision regardless of the wood species in use.
The custom Ash house number sign is now finished being CNC laser engraved by CNCROi.com, if you notice, there is a faint border around, that’s because we will use those lines to cut this piece of live edge into a solid rectangle.
Although CNCROi.com has a lot of different ways to cut the same board, our miter saw did a quick job of making sure the cuts were flush and ready for sanding, as you saw, this custom Ash house number sign started life as a rough piece of timber and now is looking like something belonging in a museum!
If this sign looks familiar, it’s similar to another Ash house number sign we did a few months back, they loved the design so much they wanted their very own but with a different number!
For this project, the customer will be applying the coats of varnish over the surface, as such, this is where CNCROi.com stops the production process.
