Black Acrylic Hearts: CNC Laser Cut
Let’s cut a bunch of custom black acrylic hearts at CNCROi.com!
You’ll notice that all these pictures and the video above actually show white hearts, that’s just the protective masking that keeps their surface nice and beautiful till the customer receives them in the mail.
These custom black acrylic hearts are 1/8″ thick, the laser not only cuts them out of the sheet of acrylic but also gives them a beautiful flame polish along the edges.
You’ll notice that each one of these custom black acrylic hearts is cut one at a time, the accuracy of our laser is within 5 nanometers, so they are completely identical in every way first to several hundred later.
Hearts can be made out of any color, here’s a production run of red acrylic hearts that were also engraved.
Something you don’t see in the video or photos of the cutting process of these custom black acrylic hearts is the flame shooting down, due to cutting essentially gas using compressed air, going under the sheet, this is why CNCROi.com generally cuts these with masking on unless advised otherwise by the customer, as some of that soot can still come back up.
Cutting acrylic is dangerous to do, luckily, CNCROi.com has a powerful extraction system so combustible gases never has a chance to build-up and cause an explosion.
For these custom black acrylic hearts, there is a matte finish on one side and a shinny one on the other, but most acrylics have a shiny side on both sides.
The bright light you see in the cutting process of these custom black acrylic hearts, is the instant vaporization of this petroleum product, the reason you don’t see a flame coming upwards is due to the compressed air shooting down from the nozzle to put it out and shoot the fire downwards under the sheet.
Hearts don’t need to be always 2D or acrylic, here’s a job I did a that was on wood and actually used for a storage box for Valentines.
Laser cutting acrylic can be done up to an inch thick, though production does slow down a lot as it gets thicker so quite often at CNCROi.com, when it gets thicker, we generally switch over to our CNC routers as they can cut it way faster than the laser but for thin stock, the laser is ahead of the curve due to far tighter nesting capabilities.

The advantage of acrylic over metal hearts is price, although metal version of this would be far more durable, the cost would go up dramatically as well, another option would be wood which, depending on the species, would cost less or more but there is no native black colored wood out there that suited this application.
For these custom black acrylic hearts, the nesting was made as tight as possible so very little scrap was produced and sent to recycling into fresh acrylic or water bottles.
