CNCROi.com doesn’t always work from scratch for our projects, sometimes customers find something they like and just have us personalize it further for them, as we’ve done for their black walnut serving tray, the hardware was taken off and will be added back by the customer.
Once all the design aspects of the job such as job placement, font type and sizing, the next step was to stick this black walnut serving tray in our machine and go ahead and laser engrave it, the customer will be doing a resin fill so the engraving needed to be deeper than typical engravings.
The nice thing about laser engraving is that the font will be SHARP, meaning the details will not be rounded like they would be if we had used our CNC router to do this project, in some places, yes, that’s a plus, but for resin fill, it’s a redundant process as so much more resin is required – which is expensive – to do the flush filling.
Laser engraving also creates a rough surface on the bottom of the engraving, which is fantastic when it comes to adhesion of the resin fill the client will be applying in the work that we do on their black walnut serving tray.
Hardwoods, softwood, exotic woods or even just something you cobbled together in your garage can all benefit from laser engraving of something, from a logo to a personalized message meant for the receiver of your work piece.
Even if you just want juice ditches added to your work, we can help.
As CNCROi.com isn’t cutting THROUGH the black walnut serving tray, literally any mixture of fonts and vector images work well, whether you are doing resin fill or not.
You can see the natural resins and debris from the laser engraving process settling on the surface of the black walnut serving tray, in this case, the customer will be sanding this off but if you liked the look of burning on your project, CNCROi.com can leave it on and you can seal the wood on top of all of this as you wish.
Unlike plastic and metal work we do a lot of in the shop, from fabrication to etching, this black walnut smells great… it makes the entire shop smell like a wood cabin in the woods.
Live edge, dimensional lumber, whatever you have, we can engrave it at CNCROi.com.
The smoke generated during the laser engraving process is quickly extracted from our laser as otherwise, this would build-up and become highly combustible, which means a high risk of fire, which isn’t something you want inside of a laser machine.
In this case, the engraving is Italian but you aren’t limited to any particular language, you want an engraving to be in French, Chinese or even Klingon, it’s no problem for CNCROi.com!
You can see the smoke shooting out from under the engraving of the black walnut serving tray, the reason for this is that CNCROi.com has compressed air shooting down through the head of the laser, this pushes it away from the optics and extinguishes any fire from coming into being before it can become a problem.
When it comes to laser engraving, and cutting (not seen in this case), CNCROi.com can help you with the design process if you aren’t familiar with how to turn your idea into reality.
There are a ton of different applications where laser engraving can be used to personalize a finished project.
Generally CNCROi.com prefers to work off wood that hasn’t been finished as there is no point to finish something that you will then sand off (if you are removing the burning and resin around the engraving) then having to refinish your board once more.
As this black walnut serving tray was finished being laser engraved in the first pass, a second was applied to increase depth, going too much power in one shot tends to produce a lot of charcoal and fire, doing multiple passes give the wood an opportunity to be vaporized in a more consistent matter.
Keep in mind that if your woodworking project isn’t flat, a necessity for consistent laser engraving, CNCROi.com can of course flatten the project using our CNC router beforehand.
We can of course also carve out your logo into any wood species you have or want work done upon.
Now that this black walnut serving tray project is finished, you can see how great the laser engraving looks.
Here’s a close-up of the engraving, you can see the rough sand-paper-like bottom of the laser engraving which provides great adhesion for resin on this black walnut serving tray.
As a woodworker myself, we can take-on the project in any process along the road to completion.
If you are looking for custom wood engraving, cutting and/or fabrication, contact CNCROi.com right now and we’ll help you through the process if you aren’t sure how it’s done.
