Laminates by themselves, at least those laser engraved have a few flaws, the biggest is that they are relatively thin, but they win out big time when it comes to contrasting color options. CNCROi.com can make things out of laminate that would be incredibly cost prohibitive using real steel or a mix of hard and soft plastics. For instance you want a gold looking plaque with high contrasting black paint fill, affordable using laminates, cost prohibitive in custom shapes in low volumes using real gold.
Acrylics on the other hand, are incredibly strong and durable but also have weight and thickness not possible with laminates. Put the two together and you end-up with a plaque that “feels right” in the color combinations that can’t be matched!

How large a plaque does this price cover?
Our standard size is whatever fits within a 9 inch (230 mm) surface diameter, if your design is larger, the cost will be more so contact us with your choice of sizes and we’ll make it to that spec. For instance, if you want something like the video above, the price would include that up to 9 inches high.
How many options are there regarding different contrasting color options?
CNCROi.com honestly has an binder that’s an inch thick with different color swatch options, we find it easier for you to tell us and we’ll send you the options within that parameter. For instance, the above is gold with black underlay.
How thick is the acrylic and laminate?
Generally, the acrylic we use is 1/4 inch or 6 mm, it has a good weight to it with strength profile. The laminate is available at 1/8th, 1/16th and even 1/64th inch depending on the color profile. By going the combination route we’ve developed, it means that the laminate thickness doesn’t matter as we don’t need to rely on it for strength as it’s adhered to with industrial double-sided tape and then our laser cuts through both layers, making a smooth dead-even match.
How durable is this custom plaque?
As with all laminates, care must be taken, don’t leave it in direct sunlight or clean it with harsh cleaners, just use a plain damp rag to remove any dust. The surface also does scratch which is why we sometimes put a clear acrylic seal on the surface for added protection.
What type of DPI resolution can you achieve on these plaques?
Generally, we engrave these at 600 DPI. It depends on the files you send to us and the detail required to achieve the optimal goal.
