Cedar House Number Sign

Making a custom cedar house number sign is fun, especially when it’s a double-sided to be hung out on the front lawn.

I documented a similar sign CNCROi.com made over a year ago which you can see in our old shop within the video below, there are of course differences in approach due to the specs of the client but generally, a cedar house number sign is a Cedar house number sign.

Whether we used hand tools or highly advanced CNC machinery to make a Cedar house number sign, having that amount of choice when it comes to making something custom to customer’s specs gives them unlimited flexibility when it comes to size, design options and materials.

I had a board that was left over from another project we did at CNCROi.com involving Cedar but those specs called for rough lumber and this Cedar house number sign called for something with a smoother finish, as such, this Cedar board was planned to have a flat surface on both sides.

This little wood chipper has come in very handy for a lot of custom woodworking projects at CNCROi.com, it’s something we didn’t have when I made the original Cedar house number sign so we are taking full advantage of it for this project.

After the Cedar board was planned and cut down to size, you can see how beautiful this wood is and once varnish is applied at the end of production, all these colors will pop!

Our Austrian wide-format industrial laser does quick work of this Cedar board, though we can technically engrave straight through it, we are only going at a depth of roughly 1/8″ or 3 mm.

Using our laser on wood, CNCROi.com can make a lot of custom products from wooden stamps to custom signage.

As we are using our CNC laser to accomplish the markings on the Cedar house number sign, we get the extra benefit of charcoal, with the heat generated by the laser going out of focus as it vaporizes into the Cedar, it causes the wood to darken.

When you mix darkening of wood with shadows created by depth, you get a really beautiful and natural looking contrast that is really hard to replicated in any other way.

Next step is bandsaw cutting, I really love my bandsaw and use it when ever I get the chance, it’s such a simple yet powerful tool at CNCROi.com that’s as much fun to use as all the other CNC equipment we have in the shop.

Using our amazing bandsaw, from the reference lines created when the laser engraving happened on one side, CNCROi.com cut out the Cedar house number sign so that the other side could be laser engraved with pretty good accuracy.

There is no point in cleaning or masking this project, both sides need a lot of work so it’s just more efficient to make the whole Cedar house number sign “dirty” during production then clean it all up in the end.

The other side happens much like the first, our laser goes over the areas needing engraving and vaporizes the surface producing a really nice rich charcoal without the use of paint or additives.

This is a custom Cedar house number sign that’s now finished being planned, laser engraved, cut, laser engraved again… it’s now time to sand the whole thing!

Ever since I made my custom laser cut downdraft table and then augmented it to use for welding, I’ve been truly fascinated by just how useful this piece of custom furniture has become.

It’s been almost two years since I made the custom downdraft table at our old CNCROi.com shop and I can’t imagine life without it.

Here’s a picture of the surface before all the work sanding this masterpiece is set to take place.

And the results after are spectacular, everything is nice and sharp, I really like the contrast our laser created, one process creates both depth and contrast, that’s just cool.

The next step is applying varnish over the entire Cedar house number sign, front, back and all the sides to preserve the wood (Cedar has natural preservation qualities) that much more for durability for years to come.
