Christmas Ornament Holders: 1/8″ / 3 mm MDF CNC Laser Cutting
Not only does CNCROi.com make custom Christmas ornaments but we can also make Christmas Ornament Holders to hold them, in this case, out of 1/8″ or 3 mm MDF.
This project was for an outdoor festival where children will come and paint these Christmas ornament holders, so although they were about to be plastered with paint, I still decided to mask the underside so esthetically, they weren’t under the impression they were painting over coals.
CNCROi.com has a good inventory of MDF in the shop, we use quite a bit of it as it’s a great material for many budget conscious projects we work on and we will soon be launching another business solely focused on MDF which I’ll announce in a week or two when it goes live.
Big production runs of MDF are something we do regularly, here’s an example of some gears, ironically, also for kids to paint over which could have easily doubled as Christmas ornaments in this blog post’s Christmas ornament holders.
This thin MDF is also very cost-effective to cut and ship, a full sheet is easily lifted with one hand and when it’s cut into the various shapes our customers want, fit nicely and compactly in just about any box we have at CNCROi.com.
For these custom Christmas ornament holders, we made several hundred of them, they all started the same, cutting out the inner holes (in this case, stars) followed by the outline of the half Christmas tree with related stand-up foot peg.
This ensures that everything CNCROi.com was producing was accurate, sure, kids won’t notice but we will and that’s enough to put our wide-format industrial Austrian laser into 5 nanometer accuracy mode to produce the absolute best Christmas ornament holders on the planet for our customer!
Another project I did a while back were sample MDF shields, in the hundreds, for a mail out sample pack.
The steps are the same, this involved engraving, then inner cuts then outer cuts and those that received them loved them so it was a worthwhile investment by CNCROi.com.
CNCROi.com also makes lots of custom cake toppers using the same MDF as the gears, fish (lower down on this post and in the video), shields and a bunch of other projects showcased on our website, including the Christmas ornament holders.
There are a lot of applications where MDF is the best, in the case of MDF cake toppers, we generally make two and ship them to the customer with instructions that one is meant for the cake (impossible to clean-up after sitting in icing for a while) and the other to be kept as a memory.
And there you see it, another production run (of many) using MDF for these Christmas ornament holders, we went through many sheets producing the whole order but I thought it would be boring for you to see the same thing over and over and over again in the video and photos.
The above image shows you what they look like, they are a bit messy due to lighting and light residue but perfect to grab the kid’s attention and begin the painting process, the backside is perfectly clean though as they were masked, the above picture shows you the front of the Christmas ornament holders.

Alright, now that you are a pro at reading about laser engraved and cut MDF, let’s make 462 gold fish using the same material as the Christmas ornament holders.
The production is pretty efficient when you cut-up a board full of little fish, very little wastage, you can see on the image below how the sheet looks before and after.
Each fish could have been unique but in this case, they were all made the same.
We could have also personalized them if the customer would have wanted, each with their own name or other information.
Removing the scrap from the fish reveals a perfect cut, there is no way to line-up fish like this by hand, they have to come out of the scrap material like this.
There you go, a box full of custom 1/8″ or 3 mm MDF fish ready to be painted and enjoyed by kids.
