CNC Routing A Custom Pine Cutting Board
CNCROi.com can make pretty much anything, in this case, we’ll cut a custom cutting board out of pine identical to one we cut a few weeks ago out of Corian.
If you missed my previous video where this same custom cutting board design is done out of Corian, watch it here! You can click HERE to read how that was made. Now, we’ll focus on the pine wood version.
In this case, I bought a board of pine wood at Home Depot. The board quality is excellent and for production, it’s easy to dodge knots and other imperfections in the pine if the client wishes it for their custom cutting board.
The process with this custom cutting board piece of pine is the same as the Corian version, get a board, drill it into the sacrificial board onto the CNC router and then align things for optimal material usage.
You’ll notice the X on the board, that is my zero X and Y position on the board that I’ve set-up on the ShopBot CNC router we use for this custom cutting board.
To make things efficient, the same bit was used for both the hole going around the custom cutting board to hold juices if you are cutting something with lots of water in it as we used for cutting the perimeter of the board. There are A LOT of different options when it comes to our CNC router with hundreds of bits with different profiles.
What kind of options can we put into a custom CNC router cut cutting board? Well, other than shape, material and size, the profile can be a straight 90 degree drop (like this cutting board), bevel, bullnose, ogee flush, waterfall flush and so forth. Each adds a new elements of design and mixing and matching to fit a budget. Obviously, the more bits we use and change, the higher the price point of the finished product.
All the saw dust builds-up inside, this isn’t an issue for the router at all but for videos and photographs, I actually vacuum this up on purpose to show what is being done. The role of the extraction is to pickup the fine dust and filter it out, not pick-out the debris inside of the board.
Looking at the custom cutting board thus far, you’ll notice how the edges are a bit rough, this isn’t an issue because I build a custom downdraft sanding table which makes everything flush and beautiful at the end of production.
The advantage of custom production at CNCROi.com is that we can supply your wholesale or retail channels realtime so you don’t have to hold massive inventories. Let’s say you need 50 cutting boards in inventory at any one time, to us, those can be 50 the same or 50 different designs, it really makes no difference to us!
All woods produce these bits of wood, that’s one advantage of Corian or harder wood in that these little pieces of stranded wood pieces don’t happen but it doesn’t make a difference at the end of the day as everything is sanded regardless to produce a nice consistent and smooth surface.
As for production volume, we can make hundreds or thousands of these at different sizes, we use industrial equipment, not hobby and it’s all top of the line. The advantage of doing this with a CNC router is that everything is made custom on-demand. That means you aren’t stuck having to make the exact same cutting board a thousand times, each can be optimized however you like, integrated with logos and other promotional items.
Our CNC router does an awesome job cutting out the custom pine cutting board. Everything is precise and dead-on. There are taps under that saw dust which help to keep the board from moving around when the round bit is cutting out the board from the piece of pine board.
It’s really incredible what we can make out of just about any material, if you wanted an inlay into this cutting board of another material, Corian through stainless steel, WE CAN DO THAT TOO! The options we offer our customers are incredible and are only limited by our collective imagination and your budget.
The purpose of this cutting board was to show a specific customer what we can do for them across a variety of materials, as such, it isn’t the optimal use of pine but don’t worry, we’ll use the “left overs” to make other custom items like custom coasters and a bunch of other custom stuff in the future!
Now, it’s time to sand this diamond in the rough, it already looks great but after our sanding is done, this will look better than any cutting board you can buy at a major department store… and it’s custom too!
It’s amazing what a little sanding can do, something goes from rough to absolutely showroom clean, it looks and feels so great, this should go in a museum of fine woodworking! This custom cutting board made out of pine is almost ready for the customer, we will be laser engraving their information on the board.
Technically, we could make this entire cutting board using our industrial CNC laser but it wouldn’t be an optimal use of material or process, it would be burned to a crisp and be rather dangerous and nowhere near as fast as our industrial router can cut this out. That’s the CNCROi.com advantage, we use the optimal tool for the job and if we don’t have it, we get it!
Just for fun, here is the same custom cutting board made out of Corian. The advantage with Corian is that you can get it in over 120 different colors and it will last far longer than the pine version, the disadvantage is that it can be rough on knife blades and if you drop it on the floor, there is a good chance it will shatter. Corian is incredibly strong but brittle.
