CNCROi.com: Your Destination for Custom CNC

Attending business trade shows as both an attendee and exhibitor, I often discover that custom CNC means different things to different people. For some people, it means far more than our capabilities can offer such as 5-axis titanium metal turning (different field to us but still CNC) while for others, they migrate to 3D printing (yes, we have one, but don’t use it for customer projects).

CNC stands for Computer Numeric Control but what I think it should mean is Command ‘N Control as the machines we have in our custom CNC shop do exactly as they are told, whether it’s good or bad, safe or dangerous… and that’s where having a knowledgeable operator and designer at the helm makes all the difference when it comes to production.

What we do here at CNCROi.com takes things to a whole other level though. Not only do we have the expertise and equipment but also the design experience to bring it all together. When I tell customers we are a custom CNC shop, I REALLY MEAN WE ARE A custom CNC shop.

Truth be told, the possibilities in our custom CNC shop are endless, and this takes some of our customers a few minutes to understand and even longer to exploit us for. For some of our customers, we are just a “job shop” meaning they have X units of something that they need engraved, etched, marked or annealed. That’s all we do in their minds. Same parts or each one with a unique with serialized alpha numerics.

For other companies, they get wacky ideas and quite literally can’t find any shop interested in exploring the possibilities with them. For instance, they have an award coming up that they want to give to a specific employee or division and they don’t want the “traditional award” out of crystal or want something to attract people at their trade show booth. Alternatively, they can be in the midst of product development and want a few samples to help highlight certain aspects that only a custom CNC can do just for.

What’s amazing from the picture above is all of that, including the Eiffel Tower, fit in a typical suitcase. The Eiffel Tower which I designed gets people to the booth, a visitor is then attracted to something and from there, we talk about our capabilities. The most difficult aspect of running CNCROi.com is trying to expand their mind as to how much capabilities we have across an endless variety of materials.

For instance, we can do awesome work with wood and if it’s a 2D image, do just as good a job (same job even) on stainless steel, lamacoids, anodized aluminium, rubber… it never really ends. Not only that, just like the Eiffel Tower above, we can also make 2D objects for flat packing from 3D ones. That’s where the design aspect kicks into high gear. That Eiffel Tower could have just as easily been out of stainless steel, rubber, acrylic… it never really ends.

A further step beyond even that is color changed material, for instance, we can add 600 dpi of detail like the above on plastics – this is NOT PRINTING but laser color changing. We can engrave, cut, etch and mark to add infinite levels of detail to whatever you need your conversation piece to have or your physical products needing marking.

For some of our clients, all our custom CNC capabilities are wicked overkill, they just want a “simple” log with engraving on the surface like the above. The fact that we can do so with 5 nanometer accuracy on a log the size of a breakfast table with 22 inches of thickness makes no difference. Again, the above log could be poured to be stainless steel, we can make a stainless steel front to be annealed or even from it out of concrete for engraving.

We also have an industrial CNC router and all of our equipment is TOP OF THE LINE, when we have a project due, we meet budget and timelines – it will get done. I’ve also worked very hard to have built-in redundancy in the shop, meaning if any one thing stops working like a laptop running our CNC equipment, we already have another one in the waiting ready to continue production.

This actually happened a few months ago, we didn’t skip a beat. Each CNC machine has its own laptop and they also contain up to date software to run the others in addition to a “spare” so regardless of what happens, “our laptop failed” isn’t an excuse you will hear from us.

This is why it’s vital for us to get an idea of your budget and what you expect us to do within that budget. There is no number more powerful than the one you give to us. Why? Well, it’s by far the fastest way to narrow the scope of materials and what we can do to them.

I attend a lot of networking events across a wide variety of fields and generally, it comes to budget. Customer has a project, has an idea of what they want and how much they wish to pay. We’ll of course offer options above and below the figure but knowing that number and volume is vital.
