Custom Corner Storage: Simon’s Toy Garage

Simon’s room needed a custom corner storage unit to store his vehicles, so I bootedup the CNC router and made one for him – it was wonderful furniture making practice!

I’ve been slowly improving his room, after remaking his bedroom, I found some dificiencies in my initial idea so this custom corner storage unit made using MDF filled a perfect gap.

Furniture making is something I’ve just dabbled in on and off through the years, it’s fun to do and relatively easy to design and fabricate at CNCROi.com.

I generally make a rough 3D visualization of the furniture I plan on making, it just makes things easier to then modify further using 2D designs and each time I make a custom furniture piece, I learn new ideas to apply to the next project.

You’ll notice the machine I’m making this custom corner storage for Simon is different from the one I used for his closet video at the top of this blog post, that was my “old” machine and this is my “new” machine with 14 MORE tooling options, so I have a lot more flexibility with it that I’m slowly learning the ropes of at CNCROi.com.

The biggest challenge with having 19 tools in my automatic tool changer is deciding which tool does what, when I was limited to four with my old CNC router at CNCROi.com, I had to think about the design more as I was limited to just for but with so many tooling options, a whole new world of production has opened-up for me.

Our CNC router is amazing for a number of custom furniture and related applications I make at CNCROi.com on a regular basis.

When it comes to fabricating furniture, from concept to finished piece, CNCROi.com offers you unlimited options, material through design specs, as everything is made to your spec and best of all, can be shipped flat packed or fully assembled.

What you see in the above video are actually indents or slots I made so that the shelving in Simon’s custom corner storage unit can be that much stronger as it isn’t just nailed into place, but slotted with glue and then nailed, making it dramatically stronger and durable.

The nice thing about CNC’ing custom furniture is that I have absolute control of every aspect of the design and basically, everything is made to spec right off the bat, meaning there is very little post-processing required, such as adding chamfers or whatever else that strikes my fancy.

In my shop, I have a variety of tables, here’s me making my first metal welding table that I use far more now than ever before after taking a two year course at a local college focused on welding.

Our CNC router also replaces a whole shop of tools and makes the fabrication a lot easier overall on me, as I just have to worry about assembly, not dragging pieces of furniture from one machine to another in order to do what the router can do in one shot at CNCROi.com.

After having my “new” CNC router for a few months, I can’t imagine living without it, it’s such a fundamentally massive upgrade across the board in capability, speed and precision from my old one, though my old one was extremely capable in its own right and worked wonderfully.

For Simon’s custom corner storage unit, I wanted assembly to only work one way and most importantly, to have a clean top and bottom, this meant that I carved out a bit of the top and bottom pieces so that the side pieces were flush, meaning the top and bottom surface didn’t show the edge of the MDF.

The nice thing about MDF is that it’s easy to work with, it basically breaks down to powder, which makes sanding very easy and painting even easier as it just soaks it up in short order.

At the end of the day, the design dictates which tools we use and processes employed in order to achieve the results our customers want.

The inside parts of Simon’s custom corner storage unit are actually cut to specific sizes because I needed to put a backing at the bottom of his custom closet, so they don’t just add light to the furniture but serve as a way of finishing-up another project.

MDF is available in a variety of thicknesses, and I can mix and match those thicknesses as well, so if you wanted thinner shelves but thicker carcass, that’s not an issue for CNCROi.com.

Even with a powerful vacuum system sucking the MDF down so that it doesn’t move during production and another vacuum sucking the dust created by the cutting of the MDF, there is still plenty of dust to move around, so I’ve taken many steps through the years to try to limit the amount of MDF in the air during production of items such as this.

Of course, if you require templates to make your own furniture, we can help you too!

After the design is sorted, it’s nice to have the finished pieces just sitting there waiting for clean-up and assembly without requiring any additional tooling or processing at CNCROi.com, makes for efficient custom corner storage production for Simon’s room!

After removing all the dust and sacrifical pieces of wood, you can now more clearly see the pieces that will be turned into Simon’s custom corner storage unit.

I always do a dry run before actually assembling pieces together because it’s a pain to change things once you have glue and nails involved with a design, furniture or otherwhise.

But even without glue, the custom corner storage unit holds itself up, that’s a great start!

Furniture can also be made using our CNC laser, though the router is a better tool for this type of work as you can control the depth, hence, pockets for things to interlock without showing on the ouside as you see in the above CNC laser station.

You’ll notice that in the video portion of this blog, the finished cstom corner storage unit I made is grey and not orange like in these photos, the reason for that is I decided to paint it another color after letting it sit in Simon’s room for a few weeks, otherwise, it’s the same piece of custom furniture.

A few coats of paint and Simon’s custom corner storage unit is just about done, it’s easier to paint first then assemble in this case than the other way around as everything is flat.

I did of course make a slight mistake in designing the slots, I forgot to cut them a little short, that’s why you see them in the above picture on the outsie but as this is against a bed and a wall, you won’t see this anyways, so lesson learned.
