Custom Doug Bone: Live Edge, Kiln Dried Solid Maple

Do you have a dog? You need your very own custom Doug Bone made by CNCROi.com using live edge, kiln dried solid Maple!

CNCROi.com does a lot of work using live edge, it’s something we dabbled into over the years but really got heavily into it this year and something I didn’t account for was the number of off-cuts and small pieces that we are left with.

I’ve been making cutting boards and other small items but they just don’t give the same amount of joy to man’s best friend as a Doug Bone so I decided to do a small production run of them and see how it goes!

When it comes to custom wood products, CNCROi.com can make everything from custom house number signs and welcome signs to full sized window coverings.

This is a pretty simple product but due to CNCROi.com‘s investment in various capital equipment, turning an idea to a physical marketable product is pretty straight forward, the first step is using our ShopBot PRSAlpha to make the shape of the dog bone.

We are using real Maple here, not cheap Pine that will break apart (though we can make these using that too for smaller less powerful dogs), Doug is a big dog, he needs something strong enough to widthstand his biting force.

I really love our Shopbot, it does an amazing job cutting out these shapes for CNCROi.com, it’s like a hot knife through butter and we got Maple chips flying all over the place, it’s woodworking at its best!

If you prefer to have a cigar ash tray in the shape of a dog bone, we can make that too!

Looking at this piece of live edge Maple, you can see there is a split down the middle, that’s what I’m CNC routing around because a custom Doug bone cut in half just isn’t strong enough for a dog to be chewing down onto for an extended period of time.

Thanks to CNCROi.com‘s on-demand approach towards custom fabrication, if you wanted a custom dog bone a little bigger or smaller, narrower or just a totally different shape like the silhouette of your dog, we can make that no problem!

This small production run of custom Doug bones is now done, you can see the wood grain and the variation in the wood in this piece of live edge Maple that’s only possible when made using kiln dried REAL wood.

These are among my favorite live edge cottage signs I’ve had the honor to make, woodworking when you have the right tools and capabilities is quite fun.

Here’s a close-up of what a Doug bone looks like straight from the machine, to save on machining costs, CNCROi.com isn’t sanding this, we will cut the rest out using our bandsaw and then just router out a profile, which will clean-up the edges and give it a really neat look at the same time.

Here’s a picture of the Doug bone right before heading down the line to the next woodworking machine, it’s fun coming-up with new projects, this is way more fun than making a rectangular cutting board!

It’s great fun using the bandsaw, there really isn’t a tool that I don’t enjoy using in the shop, each has their quirks and capabilities and the real fun comes when you can optimally use each of them to do the best job they are designed and built for.

I’ll be making a bigger production run of custom Doug bones today so I’ll change the blade in the bandsaw to a narrower one to make cutting them out a little easier and efficient, CNCROi.com has good equipment, but even that can be tweeked to make it better depending on the job at hand.

Right now I have my default resaw blade on the bandsaw, I just didn’t want to bother changing the blade for a small run as generally, the bandsaw is used for bigger jobs where we do need a wider blade to work properly through the material.

CNCROi.com is now done the rough shaping and liberating of the Doug bone, the next step for these custom dog bones is to head over the the table router to clean the edges up on both sides and give it a really nice profile.

Here’s the very first Doug bone doing through the final step of custom dog bone production, the small edge left over from the CNC router is clearly visible but it’s nothing, our table router will power straight through it.
