Custom Lamacoid Metal Plaques
Let’s make some custom lamacoid metal plaques at CNCROi.com!

For this specific lamacoid metal plaques project, we are making three at once, it’s a great way to nest things tight, saves on production time and the results of one or a thousand are the same, so why not!
These custom lamacoid metal plaques have a brushed aluminium/steel look to them, although CNCROi.com can totally make the same custom plaques using actual aluminum and real steel, the cost would be dramatically higher, so using a lamacoid is a good alternative, especially for something that will reside indoors and away from the elements.
Unlike our metal work, where we’d use our fiber laser to do the work, we use our CO2 laser source instead, it’s faster than fiber and for this material, we are just vaporizing a very thin layer of metal looking plastic to reveal the black core of the custom lamacoid metal plaques.
Of course, if lamacoids aren’t your thing, wood is great too!
The amount engraved is less than 1/32″ deep, that’s all that is required, although we can go deeper at CNCROi.com on these custom lamacoid metal plaques, it makes no difference as you aren’t getting “more black” the deeper you go, the core is the same black throughout.
There is a minimum amount of residue when it comes to engraving custom lamacoid metal plaques, so yes, this does build-up on the surface, but it’s quickly removed by our vacuum system and wiped down after production at CNCROi.com, so it’s nothing to be concerned about.
Here’s a great video showing you the different material options available when it comes to tags and the sort.
The major advantage of lamacoids over other materials are the endless variety of core colors and surface colors available, you can have color combinations that simply aren’t possible any other way using any other material type.
The backing of these custom lamacoid metal plaques is quarter inch or 6 mm thick MDF, or fiber board, it’s plenty strong, glue and stickies love to adhere to it and best of all, it’s a very cost-effective material to work with for our customer and easy on our machinery at CNCROi.com.
For these custom lamacoid metal plaque, the design is identical except for a slight change in the company name, as a result, it would actually take longer to make just one than to do all three, they are put sideways because that happens to be the surface area afforded by the scrap piece of MDF I had in the shop.
Even my son Simon has his own lamacoid plaque, this is on his bedroom door.
When it comes to lamacoids, keep in mind, that they are plastic, do you don’t want to wash them down with detergents or tough chemicals, if you do wash downs at your facility, you do not want to use lamacoids for anything… stick with the real metals.
Laser engraving these custom lamacoid metal plaques is a relatively fast process verses doing the same using metal and our fiber laser, the results are different and the durability is completely different as well, if this is for outdoor use, nothing beats using the real thing like stainless steel.
Some applications for lamacoid work aren’t as obvious as others, but they are great regardless.
As CNCROi.com has a variety of CNC platforms and materials we can work with, there are a lot of different options available when it comes to what you may want material and fabrication wise.
After all the laser engraving is done on these custom lamacoid metal plaques, a very light pass is performed to add a border and pre-score the edge of what will be cut out of the MDF/lamacoid combination.
I’ve found that the scoring produces a better result than a straight cut for some reason when it comes to combination materials, as there is a lot more power involved with cutting than scoring.
Any shape can be cut out and engraved using lamacoids, we can also make custom signage using lamacoids that gets people’s attention QUICK!
Adding borders is a great way to add extra detail and impressiveness to the overall custom lamacoid metal plaques project, it’s simple and yet elegant, I recommend this to all my clients.
Now you can see a very different light being produced, now the power kicks in and fire and flames are produced to cut through both the lamacoid and the MDF backing, there is industrial double sided tape in between to keep everything together.
I’m not sure why, but lamacoids produce sparks, it’s possible there is a little metal content in there, who knows… but it isn’t something you normally see when laser cutting anything generally at CNCROi.com, we of course see sparks when plasma cutting metal of all types in the shop.
Laser cutting takes a lot longer than scoring the plaques, but the overall engraving process is a lot longer than cutting, the machine has plenty of power, it just goes slower to make sure the beam gets all the way though the custom lamacoid metal plaques to liberate it from the overall sheet they are coming from.
I use lamacoids at my house, in the shop and for customers all over the place, it’s a very versatile and flexible material if the application is right.
Laser cutting lamacoids, or MDF or any other material is no different, it’s either a different source and/or different speeds to get through the material, you can go faster on thin material and slower on thicker, it all depends on the density of the material to dictate speed of processing.
As these custom lamacoid metal plaques are just about done being laser cut out, you can start to appreciate what having a precise machine offers CNCROi.com, whether it’s one plaque or a million, they can all be the same or different, it makes no difference to the machine, it never gets tired and is accurate from the first to the last.
Now that these three custom lamacoid metal plaques are done being cut, you can see, though its hard to tell with shop lighting, just how great these look, the black is consistent, the aluminium look is fantastic and the overall production of this job went off without a hitch at CNCROi.com.
