Custom Lamacoid Plaque
Today CNCROi.com will make a custom lamacoid plaque, in the video of course, I go a lot deeper so be sure to watch that first!
Making custom lamacoid plaques is quite a bit of fun at CNCROi.com, each lamacoid has its own quirks and the same goes with the backing to give it added strength and rigidity.
As an almost direct comparison, you can see how real high-end custom etched 316 stainless steel looks like, which this lamacoid plaque is “replacing”.
Unlike the 316 stainless steel plaque above, a lamacoid is plastic and is “bendy” so CNCROi.com adds an MDF backing, 6 mm or 1/4″ thick, to give it dramatically more rigidity.
To marry the two together, we use industrial grade double-sided tape, it’s so sticky that once the lamacoid plaque blank is added to the MDF backing, there is no removing it without destroying one or both materials, it really is a one-time-shot!
The backing doesn’t need to be MDF either, take a look at the video below where CNCROi.com used plywood, that’s even stronger and tougher than MDF though it does add more weight.
And yes, we can also have a backing out of acrylic as well, basically, anything can becoming a backing to the lamacoid plaque made by CNCROi.com.
In this case, MDF was fine for this custom lamacoid plaque in which we are replicating the look of annealed metal, thus black on shiny grey surface that has a grain to it.
The DPI CNCROi.com can achieve on lamacoid is the same as metal, wood or most other materials including rubber, but generally we do the engraving at about 600 DPI.

You can already see the deep black that’s achieved on this metal surface with black inner core lamacoid plaque, there is dust over it that is produced during production.

Now that the engraving pass on this custom lamacoid plaque is just about done, you can start to appreciate the beauty of this lamacoid, the contrast is wonderful and produced in a fraction of the time that a stainless steel that requires annealing.
To add a little more detail to the surface of this custom lamacoid plaque, a slight engraving pass was added just to the inside of the cut line.
After the engraving passes are finished on this lamacoid plaque, it’s time to cut through both the lamacoid and the MDF backing under it, this makes sure that the edge quality is dead-on all the way through on all edges.

There is some fire being produced during the cutting of the custom lamacoid plaque but not to worry, it shoots down under it as we have compressed air shooting from the nozzle of the laser in line with the laser beam.
The custom lamacoid plaque is now done, dust and all, and the scrap material has been removed so you can gain an appreciation of the clarity of the engraving and the cut quality of the MDF lamacoid laminate.
