Custom Large Plywood Signage

Custom large plywood signage is made at CNCROi.com using any design spec profile you want, in this case, the project used 3/4″ furniture grade plywood and we used as much of a 4 x 8 ft sheet as possible for the entire project.

This custom large plywood signage will have a ledge all around in order to give the customer a way to add contrast to the overall signage edges, this means, no matter where they put it, it will stand out!

The very last process involved with this custom large plywood signage is cutting it out, but you’ll see that ledge being carved out of the plywood all around first, this took up quite a bit of time as I needed to produce the ledge using multiple passes, thus going around and around, what seems like, the same pieces.

Although my Shopbot is larger than 4 x 8 ft, I only used that size sheet on it for the vacuum system as rarely do I need anything bigger, of course, I’ve since bought a Thermwood 5 x 10 ft router which I utilize most of, but for this project, the biggest sheet I used happens to be the same size as the vacuum, so it held everything perfectly fine.

What I really like about plywood is that it’s an incredibly versatile material, it can be cut with our routers, lasers, hand and power tools.

This is why for this custom large plywood signage, you don’t see any screws or other hold-down methods being employed to keep the sheet down, it’s all vacuum!

You can see the Thermwood right behind the ShopBot, it’s a beast by comparison in every way, but it was still very much being fine-tuned and optimized in order to get ready for work at CNCROi.com, quite a laborious process compared to what I went through with the ShopBot when I first got it.

Of course, if you wanted custom large plywood signage that was bigger than one 4 x 8 ft sheet, that’s not a problem, we can make these literally at any size, tiling and making interlocking segments to any size you want.

Plywood makes for great signage material because it’s relatively light weight, cost-effective and pretty durable in most environments.

There isn’t much dust during all this CNC routing because I also have an overhead vacuum system sucking the saw dust as it’s being made at CNCROi.com, one thing I have noticed is that although this works great with the ShopBot, my new Thermwood is so fast that the vacuum system can’t keep-up as well with the overall production of the wood chipper.

The nice thing about using thicker plywood to make signage and other types of jobs with is that the weight of the material itself helps keep it down, this becomes more challenging with very thin stock as it tends to want to lift by the action of the router going through the material.

When it comes to your design options for custom large plywood signage, they are endless, this includes font selection and size, to overall curvy or square elements you want for your sign made by CNCROi.com.

I optimized the size of this custom large plywood signage to fit the 4 x 8 ft sheet as much as possible as one solid unit of the customer’s logo, any bigger, I’d have to use more than one sheet, with a slight margin all around in order to account for the “just in case” safety factor if I didn’t put the sheet of plywood perfectly square.

Of course, like most other woods, you can also stain and paint plywood quite easily.

A few more pictures to show you how well it cut and the size compared to the overall CNC router, what’s interesting is that this would look small on the Thermwood, as the machine is so much bigger and heavier overall.

When it comes to interlocking parts, plywood is great, because even if its slightly warped or imperfect, the strength profile of plywood is amazing at just about any thickness.

Regardless of the CNC router we could use for this custom large plywood signage, the results would have been identical, the difference between the two machines really comes down to time and rigidity but for jobs like this, where there isn’t a rush, this job was no sweat for the smaller ShopBot.
