I’ll post lots of photos and videos in this blog post about custom machine tags but if you want to watch a video done earlier showing the larger version of a custom machine plate being manufactured, watch this.
When it comes to custom machine tags, we mean CUSTOM. This means you pick material, volume, details to be engraved or annealed and so forth, to your specs! Of course, CNCROi.com does keep inventory of our more common offerings if your requirements don’t match your budget.
In this case, we’ll make the same design as you saw on our custom machine plate but a smaller version, using the same material. The custom machine plate was made out of the same blue anodized aluminium except it’s 0.05″ thick while the custom machine tag is 0.02″.
There is some shade variance with anodization regardless of the color, which you can see when you look closely at them together.
The industrial laser engraving process of producing these custom machine tags is the same regardless of the color, thickness or size of the anodized tag or plate. It’s always our wide-format Austrian laser focusing on the top surface and vaporizing off the anodization producing an off-white result.
This is why I tend to shy away from using grey or light-colored anodized custom machine tags for our customers, the contrast is there but nowhere near the same as a deeper darker color.
When it comes to your design options to add to these custom machine tags, they are infinite. CNCROi.com engraves them at 600 dpi and if needed, can go even higher to a thousand dpi if you have extremely fine details (like blueprints or electrical drawings).
Like the custom machine tags we produce for our customers, the options when it comes to fabricating them are as endless as the possibilities engraving or annealing onto them are.
Even if you want your 11GA custom stainless steel plates to be in the shape of your logo, it makes no difference to us as long as you have a budget to support this ultimate customization.
The resolution we achieve with our laser is the same whether it’s these anodized aluminium tags or their stainless steel, brass or other metal cousins.
This is because our Austrian laser has BOTH a CO2 laser source and a fiber one, we just switch the laser source to match the material type.
Something to keep in mind is that when it comes to custom machine tag production, regardless of material (we’ve made them in laminates, polycarbonates etc… ) that the more flexible you are and higher the volume, the more affordable this becomes as an option for your factory, even if they are all different sizes.
For instance, if you need 75 custom machine tags but across four sizes, if they can all be done in the same material, you will benefit by an overall lower price per unit as volume discounts kick-in as the set-up is ONCE instead of 4 x if you wanted to use four different materials.
Now, this might present a bit of an issue for you, say you produce 10 machines a month requiring a custom machine tag but want to benefit from the volume of ordering 75 in one shot. No problem!
CNCROi.com keeps customer inventories, which means you don’t need to “know” your serial numbers, machine plate IDs and other relevant information ahead of time, when you get an order, have your purchasing send us the specs and we’ll make and ship that plate for you!
We have some of our customers who get us to make a whole wack of custom machine tags for them but leave a few fields empty and they prefer to hammer in the details using a die.
We offer you a host of solutions, and generally, most of the work we do is out the door within 24 hours.
Generally, our customers provide us with vector images and text which are outlined and saved as curves, this means even if we don’t have the font, it will engrave or anneal perfectly to your specifications.
As for color, a common question we get, you can have us engrave any color onto anodized aluminium as long as it’s off-white and with stainless steel, dark brown to black.
The advantage of anodized aluminium custom machine tags are that we can produce them in a large variety of colors to match your corporate branding, whether you want high visibility orange, blue, green, purple, pink… it’s up to you!
Our most popular colors though are black and blue and we tend to avoid the lighter shades of color like gold and silver as mentioned earlier due to contrast issues.
The above picture by the way is matte finished stainless steel that’s been annealed.
As we produce these custom machine tags on-demand, every feature can be customized, color, shape, thickness and hole placement and size. You want rounded corners? No problem! You want sharp corners with triangle holes, no problem!
We’ve even worked with powder coated aluminium which is great if you wish to have something that has a “texture” to it which isn’t possible using anodization.

Another option that shouldn’t be overlooked are lamacoids, depending on the environment the machine will be found in or you just want to be a bit different, they are a great option especially with double-sided tape on the back.
There are literally endless options when it comes to lamacoids (or laminates) tagging options, the front color can replicate metal, glass and other substances including wood and the “backing” can be just as flexible.
The reason we don’t suggest lamacoids for most machine applications is that they don’t fare well under UV lighting (like the Sun), corrosive environments and areas where machine wash downs like in the food industry, are common place.

We do a lot of work across a huge variety of industries and applications, so once we know your application, we are pretty good at giving you a suggestion as to what to use.
Even brass can be annealed or marked, depending on the settings and tube we use (remember, we have two for ultimate flexibility).
I’d say “brass” is one of the most common lamacoids we actually laser engrave and cut by the way, it’s one of those substances where the laminate looks better than the real thing!
Now that this custom machine tag is done being engraved, using or CO2 laser source (the above brass tags were made using our fiber tube), all that’s required is a quick cleaning and it’s ready for a new home on a custom machine!
Metal is a wonderful option, regardless of whether its anodized aluminium or stainless steel, because it’s easy to keep clean, incredibly durable and for us, easy to work with compared to some more exotic materials out there we’ve worked with.
