Custom Maple Coins
CNCROi.com has made lots of custom coins using steel through plastics but it’s the first time we make custom Maple coins.

Custom Maple coins are made like the other custom softwood and hardwood coins we make at CNCROi.com, they start off as much larger pieces, in this case, kiln dried solid Maple that we also use for various live edge projects.
Of course, this piece of real live edge Maple is too large and thick for making custom Maple coins out of so we need to break it down into smaller pieces and thinner ones at that.
I’ve had an interest in custom coins and banks for years, I designed and fabricated a bunch of them.
Of course, that involves having to make a solid edge so that CNCROi.com can feed it through the bandsaw FLAT on one edge.
After cutting them down to size and resawing them into thinner boards, the next step is to thickness plane both sides to both clean-up the boards and make them a consistent thickness of roughly 1/8″ or 3 mm.
CNC laser engraving and cutting really likes consistency and that’s what CNCROi.com has done, transformed a piece of real wood into a consistent wood that’s perfect for our customer’s custom Maple coins requirement.
Laser engraving and cutting is a fantastic method to make custom wooden coins, the main benefit is the contrast is created from the wood itself, which means there is no paint or inks that will fade, crack and peel over time.
Of course, CNCROi.com can make the custom banks to hold the custom coins as well.

When it comes to your design options, they are endless, these custom Maple coins could have been any size and the design itself can be anything you want, one sided or double sided.
After laser engraving, CNCROi.com‘s CNC laser then cuts out the coins so there is absolutely no loss in precision or accuracy as endless coins are produced.
The results look fantastic, I’ve been making mostly Oak coins for a very long time and it never occurred to me to make them out of Maple but the results look just as spectacular.
Making custom Maple coins by CNCROi.com doesn’t really have any volume minimums so whether you want one or a million, we can make them for you.
What I love about custom wooden coins is how each one is totally unique even if they all have the same design, each has a different grain density and distribution, texture and natural variances.

Another thing to keep in mind with these custom Maple coins is that one side is all the same and the other side (these are double-sided) is different for each coin – but if you wanted them to all be the same or different, it’s not an issue for us.
This was a relatively small production run of custom Maple coins, but I don’t mind that, especially when it’s the first time we make something using a material CNCROi.com has never used for this purpose but the results have been spectacular.
Like the laser engraving, the cutting process is also on a one-at-a-time basis, meaning different shapes and sizes can be mixed with the others in any quantity or volume.
This means with CNCROi.com, you are not stuck to make everything the same, design through size and shape, you can be entirely flexible as you wish.
Like the other coins we make, including the Oak ones at CNCROi.com, a little clean-up and finishing is done before shipping these out of the customer.

Of course, there is a little sanding required on both surfaces after production but it’s minimal which is why there is no masking required.
You’ll notice that sometimes the coins fall through, that’s because the Maple slats have started to warp slightly from the heat generated from the laser engraving process (removing moisture and creating charcoal).
You can see this is a little production run, but was great fun and I really enjoyed making these custom Maple coins.
Here’s what the coins look like after being produced, each has it’s own unique grain structure and look fantastic.
