Custom Novelty Coins: Laser Engraved & Cut Oak

Oak is a great material for custom novelty coins, it’s incredibly durable, has a high material density (great laser resolution) and can be endlessly customizable by CNCROi.com using power tools and CNC machines (router and laser).

I need to replace the blade on my bandsaw as I’m pushing more than cutting at this point as I cut through a few too many nails in some recent jobs at CNCROi.com but you can see the boards regardless need to be planned on both sides so they are not only clean but flat and parallel.

What the planner does is give me wonderful boards, all the same thickness, to then be able to laser engrave consistently, this also means that the custom novelty coins will all have the same thickness which is important.

The process is always the same with our laser when it comes to making these custom novelty coins, first step is engraving, second step is cutting, then it’s sanding and finishing before getting them shipped out to the customer.

The grain pattern is greatly exaggerated in these photos because the lights in the laser are only slightly above the edge of the boards, they are very much flat.

The nice thing about laser engraving and cutting out these custom novelty coins is the built-in permanent contrast that’s achieved, meaning there is no paint to peel, crack or fade over time, all you see is solid oak and the charcoal produced by our CNC laser.

As these are double sided custom novelty coins, I put a masking on the bottom because the laser will be cutting through it, there is a flame produced that shoots down and comes back up with a little soot, masking means I just remove that and I’m ready to engrave with little to no clean-up required at CNCROi.com during this production process.

The purpose of these coins are for handouts at religious events, as such, one side is branded and the other references to quotes from the bible.

These boards aren’t totally flat either, hence you can see that they drop slightly when they are being cut-out. I only cared that they were clean and parallel, not if they were dead flat across the entire board, because the coins are so small, they are flat and straight as an arrow.

You can begin to see the grain pattern and the laser engraving contrast created on these custom novelty coins being revealed.

I had quite a few coins to produce for this production run, the fronts were all the same but the backs were small batches of different bible references, as such, the focus was making the fronts all done first and then using a jig to individualize the backs of these custom novelty coins.

We are also able to make related items, so if you wanted coins to hand-out along with some matching boards and signage, we can produce those as well.

Below you can see the quarter inch 6 mm jig I made to laser engrave the back of these custom novelty coins, orientation was actually pretty easy because of the very strong grain pattern on this Oak.
