Custom Ornaments: Design Engraving Cutting

CNCROi.com can make a variety of products, bit and small, and custom ornaments for a host of different applications and seasons.

A great way to showcase our capabilities is to use the same design across a variety of materials, paper through MDF (wood) to clear acrylic so you can see the benefits of each one.

The first material we’ll have a look at is clear 1/8th or 3 mm thick acrylic. This acrylic is wonderful because it looks like glass but won’t shatter or be a hazard as a custom ornament.

Unlike glass, this custom ornament out of clear acrylic is also easily cut and engraved in incredible high detail relatively easily.

All the inside parts of these acrylic custom ornaments are cut first to keep everything together as long as possible, this was done after the initial engraving on the middle acrylic piece then cutting out the outline.

Our Austrian industrial CNC laser is able to cut a huge variety of materials, in acrylic specifically, we can easily cut thicknesses up to half an inch without issue and even thicker depending on the final application.

For custom ornaments such as these, 1/8th or 3 mm or 1/4 inch or 6 mm is a good thickness for this application and many other specialized ones for seasonal or corporate use.

After the laser cutting, the only thing left to do is removing the protective mask found on these custom ornaments.

Each of these custom ornaments is precise, as you’ll see using different materials, these will all be identical regardless of thickness or material.

Next up is masked quarter-inch or 6 mm MDF to give you an idea of what we can do when it comes to custom ornaments.

In this case, MDF represents what we can do with plywood and veneer in a huge variety of thicknesses, from 1/32 (roughly 1 mm) through to 3/4 inch and then some depending on the application.

Additionally, we are also able to make custom layered ornaments. For instance, if you wanted wood with an acrylic insert or the other way around, budget depending, we can do that as well.

This is a larger example but it can be scaled down to fit within your application, big or small. Of course, we can also make this out of metal from anodized aluminium through to stainless steel such as these custom poker chips.

Just like the acrylic above, these custom ornaments are cut in exactly the same process as they are the identical design with the only change being material to laser settings.

This MDF was masked to prevent smoke damage on the surface, it makes clean-up faster and efficient to use masking rather than sanding later.

From the picture below, you can see that these custom ornaments have smoke vapor on the surface of the mask, which is far more preferable to the MDF surface even though it is an easy sanding surface.

Now that we are just about done CNC laser cutting these custom MDF ornaments, notice that the shape is the same but we could have made these at any scale, from 3 ft wide down to less than an inch.

Our processes at CNCROi.com are completely scale independent, not just material and thickness independent. We can also run our laser through a database so mass personalization is possible as well with these custom ornaments.

What mass custom personalization means is that each one of these shields, just like these custom ornaments, can have an individual name on them or whatever else information you’d like.

These custom ornaments made of MDF are now complete, they look great and will be even better after the protective mask is removed.

Our last material to review and cut out custom ornaments today is paper, it’s available just about anywhere and available in a huge variety of textures and colors.

Just like the other custom ornaments out of acrylic and MDF, these paper ornaments will be cut in the same order but I skipped the engraving as you need a bright light to see it and the extra laser time isn’t worthwhile for this material.

This paper is nothing special by the way, it’s the cover over my lens tissue that I use to clean the laser lenses, so just about any paper can be magically transformed into custom ornaments.

If you wanted something ultimately more durable than this paper by the way, would could have just as easily made these custom ornaments out of polycarbonate.

From straight lines through to highly erratic ones, our industrial wide-format laser can easily generate high quality cuts.

Although this paper has a fold in the middle, I still cut out the custom ornament so that you can get a feel as to what you want to avoid when it comes to paper or material that can be folded.

The paper is moving slightly during production of these custom paper ornaments simply due to the fact that our industrial CNC laser has a high-powered gas kit attached to the head, which pushes compressed air downwards to limit smoke on the surface.

The finished paper custom ornaments are now complete, you don’t see smoke stains on the surface because of the compressed air and industrial extraction hooked-up to our industrial Austrian laser.

Laser cut paper is great for a wide variety of applications beyond awesome custom ornaments.

This is because our industrial CNC laser is accurate within 5 nanometers, we have a Trotec Speedy 400 flexx.

Close-up, you can see the incredible precision in the engraving, the spacing between the cutting and engraving is the same thickness.

You can see the acrylic transparency, looks great, we can get it across a huge variety of colors and texture possibilities.
