Custom Pterodactyl Dinosaur Model: CNC Laser Cutting
A few days ago, CNCROi.com CNC laser cut a centrosaur so today we’ll cut a custom pterodactyl dinosaur model!
The above video is interesting because we are in the closing weeks of our “old” shop while the video of the actual laser cutting is from our even earlier shop when I first started CNCROi.com.
A custom pterodactyl dinosaur model is no different than all the hundreds of other models I’ve custom designed and made here in the shop, except it’s among my very first models I’ve ever designed.
That’s why in the video, you’ll see a very early version of this model built using round wooden dowels.
I stopped designing using round wooden dowels because they are never the same diameter and they vary by a lot between lots, so this is an updated version of this custom pterodactyl dinosaur model where the guides are made at the same time as the rest of the model.
With custom designs, there is a lot that can go “wrong” during the fabrication and build process so limiting those opportunities is at the top of my list when I make stuff for customers.
What many people don’t realize is that a lot of these issues can be dealt with at the virtual design stage, way before any material is cut.
To show you the difference between CNC laser and CNC router versions of the same model, here’s me making this same model but using our ShopBot CNC router.
The build process is the same regardless of the technology used as it’s the SAME DESIGN but just done with a few minor tweeks to accommodate the equipment used to cut it from.
People wonder why we have so much fun here in the shop, flexible and varied production is the secret to making each day interesting and unique.
