Custom Shaker Doors

Our CNC router can make great custom shaker doors because it’s a very rigid platform, especially when it comes to digging into the MDF to create a shaker door, having a flat table and a gantry with zero flex is incredibly important.
For this specific project, CNCROi.com used scrap MDF we had left over from other jobs, it clears out inventory and saves the customer a lot of money as we have material that’s already paid for… it also cleans-up the shop so we can make room for more equipment!
As both the front and the back of the custom shaker doors in this specific case are out of quarter inch MDF, we can cut both at the same time, they will all be the same size as our machine holds wonderfully accurate tolerances.
The nice thing about cutting custom shaker doors in this manner is that doors can be cut inside of other doors like you see in the picture below, there is still scrap left over from this job and those will be kept for future projects needing smaller pieces of MDF.
The pieces of smaller MDF are chopped-up and will join their brothers in the fire pit so they are not wasted from start to finish regardless of use.

Generally production is done by the full sheet, the nesting is dramatically more efficient and can be tighter, as you can see from these photos, but when it comes to scrap material, using what was available is fine as they all come from full sheets originally.
With this production of custom shaker doors, you’ll notice I moved the cutting area from the front of the table to the back, there are two reasons for this move.
What happens over time is that the vacuum table loses hold because the surface of the table starts to fill-up with voids and channels, so air leaks out rather than holding down the MDF sheet.
The second reason for moving is that it’s good for the table to cut things in different areas, otherwise, you end-up wearing out certain parts of the table faster than others over time.

The scrap below after production shows you there are still some good parts in this MDF that will be kept after the pieces that aren’t any good are cut out of it.

Taking a look at the cool table designs, sometimes I do keep these as they look cool art displays so this was a fun job and I was happy it was the last job.
