Custom Shooter Trays: Live Edge
Let’s make some fun custom shooter trays using live edge wood plank at CNCROi.com!
These custom shooter trays were branded with the laser but that isn’t shown, I wanted to focus entirely on just the production of the trays, not the branding aspect of them.
I’ve really come to enjoy working with wood directly from plank form over dimensional lumber, it’s just a whole other process that has its own challenges but also flexibility when it comes to the custom production of whatever CNCROi.com‘s customers want us to make on their behalf.
Having flexibility in design and volume means we can make short production runs for you or a variety of custom wooden gifts in one run so you have a whole bunch of gifts to give to others in addition to your project shipped right to your door!
We are starting to process lots of live edge wood at CNCROi.com from which we make a variety of projects but it’s fun to take a step back and see what else we can make for our clients, that’s where the custom shooter trays came about.
As you can see, this piece of lumber has really had better days, it’s got a story to tell on the surface but we’ll remove all of that and bring it back to its former glory.

A new shop toy at CNCROi.com has been this electric hand planer, I really don’t know how I lived so long without it, it’s an amazing tool as it saves me a lot of CNC router time, doing a pre-flattening then using the CNC router to finish the job as there was a lot of wasted travel time on really warped boards in the past.
Pre-flattening by hand takes a fraction of the time and it’s far more energy-efficient when it comes to making custom shooter trays in this case, it doesn’t really matter the finish from the hand planer because the router will smooth everything out.
Custom trays are always fun, the options are endless as the wood species and design parameters, CNCROi.com makes what you want how you want it!
As you notice, the bed of my ShopBot PRSAlpha is getting full of wood chips during the production of custom shooter trays, it really has no effect on the work being done because the only thing being worked on is the surface of the wood, table can be cleaned-up later after everything is done.
These holes are half-inch or 12 mm deep, they look rough but again, it doesn’t matter because we are in the making phase of these custom shooter trays and not finishing so roughness can be easily sanded away.

Live edge wood is quite a different animation than dimensional lumber, it has cracks, hard parts, soft parts… just a lot more variability and this plank was no different, that’s why I positioned the cutting out of the custom shooter trays as I did to go around cracks and splits that I saw in the wood.
The first custom shooter tray is literally live edged on the tip, it’s a pretty interesting look that I didn’t really think about before but it’s a nice effect to show its origin and give it a bit more back story.
CNCROi.com can make custom trays however you wish, here’s some awesome US state cigar ash trays but they can be candy trays just as easily.
Looking at these pictures, you can really see a big split in the wood right in the center of this live edge plank, as such, there was only one way to make two more custom shooter trays, one above and the other below the crack.
Regardless of orientation or size, our CNC router does quick work at producing a great on-demand custom shooter tray to the specs outlined, the design is irrelevant, whether they are all the same or different, it makes no difference to CNCROi.com!

There is a slight ledge around the bottom, the board had issues and it was the best way to keep them in place during the production of these custom shooter trays.

Luckily, CNCROi.com can quickly bandsaw them out of the live edge plank and then sand the edges flush in one go.
The semi-finished rustic looking custom shooter trays look pretty good, I can probably finish them a little more but for me, that’s totally fine and a varnish can be applied to make the wood grain pop even more.
