Custom Solid Surface Signage: Silt Corian

Corian is very much like wood, without the grain or splinters, as a result, it’s easy on machinery and produces fantastic results no matter the color or texture options you choose… and we offer them all, check out: Custom Corian Color Options
Custom coasters made out of Corian will pretty much last forever, as long as it isn’t thrown or falls on the floor, as remember, solid surface material is very strong but also very brittle.
Corian, or any other differently branded solid surface material that CNCROi.com works with, produces very static chips that resemble snowflakes but stick to literally ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING.
For this custom solid surface signage, there will be a bevel along the edge, as such, we will use two different bits for this project, the first creates the 45 degree bevel and the second will cut the Corian out of the sheet.
The bevel produced by a CNC router is nice and clean, the consistent power and speed creates a really flawless edge that’s hard to achieve otherwise using power or hand tooling.
Cutting out the custom solid surface signage is when the real chips start to stick to everything, as the profile, or bevel, is only on the top part of the plaque, the rest is cut with a regular solid surface optimized bit.

As Corian is a very strong, yet brittle material, I had to create tabs to keep everything in place so that nothing moved throughout production, if it moves, you’ll get issues with edge quality at best, and total scrap at worse.
This custom solid surface signage project required three pieces of Silt Corian, so I made all the signage in one shot using the router, which will then be transferred to our laser for the engraving process at CNCROi.com.
If this was wood, the steps would be almost identical to what you see here with the solid surface sheet, the only difference would be that we’d have to be more careful with movement by creating bigger and thicker tabs.
CNCROi.com also fabricates production aids using solid surface material as well, like the hold-down tabs that we used for this very project using Corian.
The tabs do produce an issue with the custom solid surface signage that we don’t want though, so they need to be sanded down, of course, this causes other edge issues so that is further hand sanded to perfection, until they are totally unnoticeable.
Here’s a close-up of what the tabs look like, they aren’t pretty, but after they have served their purpose, you won’t even know they are there.
Masking is applied to the front of all the custom solid surface signage because after the laser engraving process, CNCROi.com will be paint filling them… and it’s easier to paint fill and remove the masking than splatter paint everywhere then have to sand everything down.
We have multiple platforms that can make all kinds of wonderful stuff using solid surface materials.
Laser engraving produces a nice crisp edge and engraving in the custom solid surface signage, if the signage is very large, this doesn’t matter as much and we could have done this entire job with our CNC router but for small details like this, the laser is best.
Laser engraving Corian is a very slow process, it’s a very dense material and it’s plastic, so the settings have to be just right to not produce something that’s burned, just excavated where required for the custom solid surface signage to look great!
All three custom solid surface signage plaques are done in the same fashion, it’s like an assembly line, create the shape on the router, do the laser engraving and then paint filling, with sanding in between each step.

Paint filling is a little tricky, you want to keep the aesthetic of the sanded base of the laser engraved area but you also want to fill it with the color you require.
Removing the masking, and a bit of spot sanding, produces fantastic results for these custom solid surface signage plaques.

All the close-ups in the world will look great, these are relatively small, so the fine details are important, if this was a few feet across, then these very fine details would be lost close-up at CNCROi.com.
The backing of all three custom solid surface signs is different, the two smaller rectangular ones required a magnetic backing and the big oval a picture frame clip.
