Custom Stamping Wood Block
CNCROi.com can make custom stamping wood blocks for use in printing or branding purposes in any size, shape and wood species.
Over at my other business making custom banks, SandboxRanch.com, I laminate a lot of solid red oak, so pieces of that are always left over and guess what, that’s perfect material for custom stamping wood block production!
This off-cut is quickly transformed into a solid block at CNCROi.com using our handy table saw – really nothing beats using hardwood for projects like this that are already flat and parallel, meaning the custom stamping wood block will work PERFECTLY for eons to come.
After being cut to size and all sides cleaned-up, it’s time to stick this custom stamping wood block into the laser to do the engraving – on this front, I screwed-up twice, but don’t worry, as everything is made in the shop, everything can be fixed properly.
CNCROi.com has years of experience with Oak, it’s really a wonderful hardwood, it laser engraves wonderfully and for plaques to networking cards, looks great in any light!
The first screw-up I did on this printing block was not engraving it in a mirrored fashion, you’ll notice how all these pictures show a perfectly legible wording and font, this is a problem because you DON’T want this for stamping purposes, as the image is reversed.
Having the stamp reversed means that the image is properly imprinted when the custom stamping wood block is pressed down on the substrate, I just finished a big job doing custom live edge awards and this looked fine to me because that’s what you wanted for that other job.
In order not to completely burn-up this custom stamping wood block and cause a fire in the machine, I took things nice and slow at CNCROi.com, going layer by laser until I achieved the depth required.
The harder the wood, the more power is needed to engrave or vaporize materials off the surface of the material, with Pine we would have gone through this custom printing block but with Red Oak, it’s a lot tougher.
When it comes to working with wood, CNCROi.com has experience from live edge kiln dried hardwoods and softwoods to dimensional lumber.
When it comes to laser engraving resolution possible on your custom stamping wood block, we can go incredibly fine as the diameter of the laser beam is less than the thickness of a strand of hair and the density of Red Oak specifically is very high, so even fine details come out great.
The nice thing about a custom printing block made out of wood is that it has a lot of character, the grain and other details particular to wood, which don’t exist in rubber, give it a very rustic look and having something this thick makes for a lot of gripping options being available.
In the above, you can see what a custom stamping wood block would look like if it was engraved with all the other material removed but the stamp, so as this is a screw-up, let’s do the other side but this time the other way around, just so you can see what that looks like.
Engraving as you saw on the other side, or this side, is the same process, same passes, it’s just that different areas of material is removed from the custom stamping wood block.
Custom wooden stamps can be made using a variety of wood species, here’s a quick comparison of just some of the options available to you.
There is less smoke during this process though because CNCROi.com is removing less material overall, keep in mind that smoke has a direct relation to how much material is being vaporized.
So, now that we know what the wrong thing looks like, it was time to cut out this custom stamping wood block again and make it properly at CNCROi.com!
You’ll notice that unlike the other photos, this isn’t as legible, as the engraving is mirrored.
Of course, if you prefer a self-inking stamp and want a lot of color options, CNCROi.com can make that for you as well.
Now you can see the custom stamping wood block properly done, so when ink is applied to the surface, everything but the logo will appear, as the CNCROi.com client wants.
Here’s a comparison of both stamps, it’s easy to spot the right and wrong printing block isn’t it?
Let’s look at close-up shots of this custom stamping wood block, this really showcases the depth achieved and the quality of the engraving performed at CNCROi.com.
Wood always looks amazing when it comes to wooden printing block production, unlike rubber, it has a warmth to it that’s only possible from using a material that was once alive and kicking.
Rubber or wood, CNCROi.com can do it all for you using any combination of fonts and vector black and white imagery.
You’ll notice that the edge quality is SHARP, all the curves are round, the inner angles are precise and there is a very small shoulder all around to add a little more strength to the parts that stick out on this custom stamping wood block.
What I like about laser engraving wood is that the grain follows through from the surface all the way through the material, if you wanted that grain to actually be more prominent in the stamp, we can laser engrave the entire surface slightly before engraving the depth of the custom stamping wood block.
CNCROi.com can produce custom stamping wood blocks of any size, shape or material, you want a specific wood species? No problem… and we can engrave all the edges and even the top so if you wanted one stamp with 6 printing areas to use, no problem!
