Custom Table Top Display Design: Part II
When I first designed my custom table to display design, it ended-up quite different from what I originally envisioned, it’s quite a leap to go from this video of the final design…
To what I left-off with originally on this blog post that was my original concept.
So what happened?
As happens quite a bit in the design process, new ideas start to form and what I thought was cool and functional begins to evolve into something else that’s even more so and this custom table to display design was no different from the tons of other things I designed in the past and what I’ll make well into the future so let’s see how this approach took off.
The first thing I did was apply all the lessons I learned when I first went about making this custom table to display design and applied it from scratch towards a totally new design that would have all the benefits of what I had previously designed but none of the drawbacks.
Something I’ve done a lot of, and you can see it in this custom table to display design, is that I use same pieces over and over again to greatly simplify the assembly process and make it obvious as to what goes where, if a part doesn’t need to be repeated, don’t but if it does, make it identical and modify the pieces that do have to be modified unique.
When it comes to finishing options, they are endless, one project I did a while back for fun was a really cool gold-plated looking MDF box from the Hellraiser movie series, it’s always fun to try new things in the shop and that’s how you get good at something! Doing!!
Anybody can design a 3D model, this custom table to display design is no different, the hard part is translating this into a real-world object where the laws of physics and the imperfections of materials really come into play.
If you are wondering about more details how CNCROi.com goes from prototype to finished model, here’s a video showing you some of the thought process behind it using a far simpler model.
Luckily for me, I spent years teaching myself how to design for and with plywood, so I knew coming into the custom table to display design what was and what wasn’t practical.
What I really appreciate about being able to design and test models virtually for my customers at CNCROi.com is that it’s almost a dream state, hours can pass during this design process but it will only feel like minutes as there is so much to keep track of, even for a model this relatively simple.
CNCROi.com isn’t just limited to plywood, literally any material can be fabricated, here’s a metal prop from my invention over at MetalBounty.com.
And a metal tea light from TeaLightBox.com just to show you the design options if you prefer it to be made using something else than plywood.
I’ve designed so many things that I only need to get an idea of what I want and then can start designing it right away until I have a model that fits that application, in this case, the custom table to display design is absolutely perfect in both esthetic and function for my TeaLightBox.com display I did over the 2018 winter holidays.
The goal of a table top display is to both hold the product AND most importantly, grab people’s attention to want to come to visit your booth in the first place but it’s a fine line, too much attraction takes away from what you are selling and too much practical usefulness ends-up being bland and boring.
This model was very simple to design and build, I’ve made bigger stuff too.
I’ve very proud of how this first version of my custom table to display design came out virtually and then after I actually built it, it was a fun project to showcase the power of 3D product development!
