Custom Wall Signage: 1/4″ 6 mm MDF

For this project specifically, I made two Chinese inspired signs, I find Asian characters visually interesting and it brings-up good memories of when I lived abroad for close to a decade before founding CNCROi.com when I returned to North America.

The reason why the vast majority of our custom wall signage is made out of MDF is due to the fact that it’s very easy to work with and modify on-site and it paints incredibly well.

The durability of MDF indoors is also second to none, especially after it has been painted, but if you wanted something with a bit more contrast or using a plastic laminate, CNCROi.com can produce that for you as well.

You’ll see this sign behind me in endless videos as I stuck it behind my laser after it was made years ago, it’s held-up great considering the industrial environment this custom wall signage made using lamacoids is in.

When it comes to resolution, meaning how tight the details can be that we cut out, for our CNC laser specifically, we are only limited by the diameter of the photons and the related material they vaporize, so figure 1/32″ or a fraction of a mm using quarter inch 6 mm MDF.

When it comes to our CNC router though, we are limited by the diameter of the bit used, we can cut using something as small as an 8th inch bit (3 mm) but most of the jobs we do are quarter inch for various reasons when it comes to custom wall signage.

What this means in plain English is that with a laser, CNCROi.com can produce sharp inner corners using our CNC laser while inner corners from our CNC router jobs are roughly the radius of the bit used.

CNCROi.com can of course mix and match machinery and even produce something using something ultra-durable like Corian for custom wall signage as well.

But the most cost-effective is MDF or masonite or hardboard, which ever brand name you wish to use, they are generally interchangeable.

When it comes to custom wall signage, if you are looking for something a bit more with some scenery to it, CNCROi.com can make that for you too, here’s something I made using pallet wood that, again, you see behind me in many videos on this site.

It was a fun job to do, it just shows you the flexibility of our approach when it comes to making custom signs for any purpose, whether it’s pallet wood or something more exotic.

Again, any size, design or mix and match of materials, for those custom window coverings, I just needed something that could be propped-up against the window, so plywood was a better fit than MDF.

Another application for more portrait looking signage are welcome signs, here’s one example using a solid piece of Walnut live edge with the live edge removed.

And another with the live edge left on the custom welcome sign.

Either way, this could have been easily modified for living rooms, bedrooms or any other room of your house with any wording or imagery combo you can want.

So when I write and say that your options are endless, I mean it!

Each material and process has a plus and a minus to it, metal is a wonderful material but it’s very heavy, MDF can technically be painted to look very much like metal without the cost and weight associated to it but up-close, it looks like painted wood, but at a distance, you couldn’t tell the difference.

So when it comes to producing custom wall signage, context and distance, in addition to the message you are trying to convey, are all important aspects of what needs to be thought of.

When it comes to custom wall signage, I am partial to live edge wood and metal, they just have a presence that MDF doesn’t, but they are not cheap to acquire or work with so budget considerations are very important.

Generally at CNCROi.com, the limits of what we can make for you are a function of your budget more than process.

Enamel paint is wonderful, it does an amazing job protecting it and can be refinished every few years no problem sand blasting it then giving it a fresh coat of paint.
