Custom Walnut Coat Rack: Engraving Live Edge

Today CNCROi.com is making a custom Walnut coat rack using live edge which will be laser engraved by our Austrian industrial CNC router.

For this custom Walnut coat rack, we are using flattened and debarked live edge, hence the smooth look throughout this piece of solid lumber on every surface of it, front and back.

CNC laser engraving is a pretty flexible process, CNCROi.com could have used any mix or imagery, fonts and sizing to complete this custom Walnut coat rack to the customers dreams, if you like fishing, it could have been a fish engraved, you like your Jeep, that could have been engraved – it’s up to you!

There is a lot of smoke during the CNC laser engraving process, this is simply instantly vaporized Walnut (in this case) that goes from solid to gas in a split second and then some if it resides back onto the surface that’s being laser engraved.

CNCROi.com has also made some great plywood signage as well, there really isn’t much that we can’t custom fabricate for you out of wood, metal or plastic.

If you don’t like the smoky look, we or you can easily sand this off, only the laser engraving on this custom Walnut coat rack is permanent, not the smoke around the images of the bear and moose.

The process of laser engraving is incredibly precise, there are no mistakes, thus even very highly detailed imagery come out fantastic regardless of how fine the vector of the image is, in this case, for the custom Walnut coat rack.

When it comes to solid house number signs using live edge, you can pick any mix of fonts or imagery, this awesome custom coat rack could have easily been transformed into a house number sign.

The bright light you see is the instant the high-powered laser hits the surface of the custom Walnut coat rack, that’s where the smoke comes from but after this process that takes only a fraction of a second, there is no other smoke coming from the rest of the piece.

The deeper or longer our laser is on a specific area of this custom Walnut coat rack, the more smoke is produced, we can go slower or faster to suit the depth requests of our customers.

For this project specifically, I decided to do it in two parts to make the process faster, the first is CNC laser engraving the moose with the words EVAN and the doing another pass to produce the bear.

The purpose of doing this in two passes on this custom Walnut coat rack was so the laser doesn’t waste time traveling from one end of the coat rack to the other without doing anything.

The customer wanted us to only CNC laser engrave the details onto this custom Walnut coat rack and then they cleaned it up and put in the coat rack accessories.

The bear has a lot more being laser engraved into the surface than the moose, but you can see the incredible clarity of the hair on the bear coming out bright as day.

There is smoke all over this custom Walnut coat rack produced by our CNC laser but the customer is going to be cleaning it up – I initially thought this was going to be a sign but the customer ended-up making it into a really cool coat rack!

The finished custom Walnut coat rack laser engraved by CNCROi.com looks fantastic, I really like how the contrast of the charcoal our CNC laser produced comes out, this has given me so many ideas for live edge work as before, I never even thought of a coat rack using live edge!
