Custom Wooden Stamps: Oak, Pine or Maple?
Custom wooden stamps by CNCROi.com can be made using any species you want but which is actually better? Oak, Pine or Maple? Let’s find out!
My company has been making custom stamps using a variety of materials, rubber through acrylic and yes, wood, but I never actually tested different species of wood to see which produced the best custom wooden stamp.
So for this custom wooden stamp test, we’ll try two hardwoods, Oak and Maple and a softwood, Pine with our baseline being Trodat rubber which we use on all the entire range of Trodat self-inking stamps.
If you are curious, CNCROi.com also makes custom acrylic stamps too though these are generally used for harder material applications such as cement.
Depending on the application, there are a lot of different possibilities using wood, if you are a wood distributor and want to stamp crates, nothing beats rubber but whether it’s a softwood or hardwood, they produce basically the same results.
When it comes to custom wooden stamp, their application tends to be pretty specific, meaning the customer is looking for a more artistic and detailed result that’s really quite hard to reproduce using design skills alone.
Not only can CNCROi.com make custom stamps from any material but we can also make them into any shape, round, square, rectangular, triangle or literally any non-geometric shape you an think of.
The look of a custom wooden stamp impression is pretty unique and most people looking at the results will know right away that it’s made using wood over say the incredible consistency of rubber.
CNCROi.com has extensive experience making custom rubber stamps that are both part of Trodat’s range of stamps and seals as well as stand-alone rubber.
What makes custom wooden stamps unique is the grain of the wood and variations in density do an amazing job of creating a wonderful texture naturally with the impression.
Now that these three custom wooden stamps are done being CNC laser engraved using our industrial wide-format Austrian machine, you can see the results look pretty close across all of them.
Of course, CNCROi.com needs to do a baseline perfect custom wooden stamp using rubber so we have an accurate comparison to make from absolute best to natural wood.
Compare the production of rubber to other materials such as seals made out of Delrin, the results are pretty impressive but Delrin isn’t a good material for ink absorption.
As we are an official Trodat reseller, CNCROi.com used Trodat rubber for this rubber stamp which will then be glued to a wooden Maple block to provide a flat strong surface.
After clean-up of the Trodat rubber, you can see how amazing the consistency of the rubber is across the entire surface, as a result, that’s why the impression from this stamp is totally perfect and why rubber is made for stamp making over just about any other material out there.
There is a lot more finishing when it comes to custom wooden stamps than there is with rubber, which is required to make sure the wood it totally flat on all sides, especially where the stamp is involved.
When it comes to custom rubber stamp production with a self-inking mechanism from Trodat, nothing beats our impressive 5212 professional mega stamp!
It can be a messy process when it comes to custom wooden stamp but the results are just dust and some resin that’s easy to remove from the stamp using compressed air, 100 PSI no less!
You can now clearly see the CNCROi.com logo on all three of the custom wooden stamps, they are now ready to be tested using ink from a random ink pad I had in the shop.
CNCROi.com has been making custom rubber stamps for years, as the range of Trodat evolves through the years, so does my company along with it.
The results are of no real surprise, the Trodat custom rubber stamp of my name badge came out the best followed closely by Pine though as you can see, wood is a not-bad medium for stamp making but not as consistent.
The top-selling Trodat self-inking stamp that CNCROi.com produces is the Trodat Professional 5212 as there is such a huge surface area to put literally any combination of text and imagery.
Here’s a closer look at the results we produced with our rubber and custom wooden stamp impressions, for artsy or craft type work, the wood is actually pretty good with larger details though for fine details, nothing beats rubber.
What I especially like is that the ink pad itself for both self-inking Trodat stamps and stand-alone stamps is available with an incredible variety of colors.
A total surprise though was that the really beautiful results of ink on the wood itself after the custom wooden stamp test was performed, notice how the ink ends-up being a different shade of the same color depending on the wood.
