For this specific application, the customer is putting these into their woodworking project, which allows them to brand their work permanently which is something very few woodworkers do at their own demise.
The Maple used in this custom wooden token production is from kiln dried live edge boards that CNCROi.com has in the shop at all times for just this purpose, it’s resawed using our bandsaw, cleaned-up using our thickness planer then sanded beautifully for the best results for our customers who enjoy their tokens.

Laser engraving the custom wooden tokens does two things, first, it provides great contrast without having to resort to ink or dyes and secondly, it allows very sharp resolution so even the finer details can be clearly legible and seen.
You will see smoke building-up on the surface of the Maple boards made by CNCROi.com in the shop, this isn’t a problem because sanding will remove it quite easily as it doesn’t have any depth to it, it’s just on the very top.
As essentially each and every one of these custom wooden tokens is made one at a time, you can also mix and match them quite easily, meaning you don’t have to have them all identical as you see in this production run, all same, all different, no problem for CNCROi.com!

The thickness of these custom wooden tokens is slightly more than 1/8″, it provides great strength at this 1″ diameter size and fits easily in your pocket or woodworking projects.
The bright light you see in the videos and photos are from the instant vaporization of the Maple when it’s hit by the laser, it isn’t the laser itself, but the result of what it hits.
The laser engraving process is performed first followed by the cutting process to make sure everything stays whole for as long as possible, this makes sure that each and every custom wooden token is identical in this case with zero movement during the entire process.
As trees are still very much growing and our sources of live edge lumber have an endless supply for us to acquire their products from, the possibilities volume wise are literally endless by CNCROi.com and the lead time is pretty fast due to stock in the shop.

Maple is a popular choice when it comes to coins or tokens because the gain is subtle and the surface is relatively clear, it’s a hardwood as well which makes them incredibly durable as well.
These custom wooden tokens are only one sided, but if you wanted them two sided, that’s something we do a lot of at CNCROi.com using jigs for precise placement.
There is a lot more smoke created during the cutting process than the engraving process generally because more material is being vaporized during this process, this is what gives the edge of these tokens a really nice caramel color and nice texture to boot.
This production run was fun, again, no minimums or maximums, same or different designs and literally any wood species you have money for within your budget… and yes, we can also make them out of other materials too!
I prefer to use hardwoods over softwoods when it comes to making custom wooden tokens and coins, other options include plywood, plastics, rubber and literally anything else you can imagine, but hardwoods have a special place in my heart, they make the shop smell great during production and just look great after sanding.
After cleaning these custom wooden tokens up, you can see how amazing they look, solid wood is really hard to beat and I enjoy each step of the process, from kiln dried lumber to finished beautiful tokens ready for use!
A few things to keep in mind when it comes to this type of work, the first is making sure you are using vector images, they produce sharper results and make sure you are also providing us with black and white color schemes, as the laser is either on or off, no in between for the best results.
