DuPont Solid Surface Corian for Custom Fabrication
Quite often I’m approached by clients who want something custom made using Dupont Solid Surface Corian and my answer is always “what are we going to use it for?”
If you aren’t familiar with Dupont Solid Surface Corian, it’s a solid surface material that’s mostly used for custom counters of all sizes and uses, but CNCROi.com has used it for a wide variety of other projects that have nothing to do with counters of any kind.
DuPont Corian vs. Granite
I’d say half the time, the customer is deciding whether to go with Dupont Solid Surface Corian or natural Granite, both materials are very similar in price points but there are some major differences that you may not be aware of.
The biggest being that Dupont Solid Surface Corian is actually man-made from about a third resin and the rest from minerals while granite comes from a quarry, that’s why Corian can come in so many colors and is very consistent to work with compared to granite.
The second biggest difference is that granite is very easy to stain and must be sealed regularly while Dupont Solid Surface Corian after a few years of use, can be sanded again as the color is throughout the entire material so if you happen to somehow stain it, just sand it off!
Third, Dupont Solid Surface Corian is basically a plastic and as such, not very good when it comes to putting hot items on it, which is one reason why CNCROi.com can produce such great engraving and paint filling with it over granite.
When it comes to actual production and making stuff using Dupont Solid Surface Corian, it’s actually a very resilient material that works incredibly well with our CNC router and our CNC laser, it’s hard enough to maintain its shape under pressure and especially when it comes to paint filling after being laser engraved, provides amazing adhesion compared to just about any other material out there.
What I especially like about Dupont Solid Surface Corian is the huge variety of colors it’s available in and how consistent it is for custom production, meaning that unlike stone or wood, the results from our work are pretty much the same regardless of what we are doing with it.
For instance, making custom Dupont Solid Surface Corian house number signs is a lot of fun and the paint filling just works fantastic to produce the contrast while there is quite a bit more work involved if we were doing the same with acrylic or other plastics as we don’t generate the same idea rough texture from the laser as we do with Corian.
When it comes to CNC routing, Dupont Solid Surface Corian is dramatically easier on bits than any type of actual stone, it basically just flakes away while with our CNC laser, it vaporizes into a fine dust that’s also very easy to clean-up.
