Glow In The Dark Cats: CNC Laser Cutting 1/4” 6 mm MDF

CNCROi.com can now make glow in the dark cats, among many other glow in the dark type projects but I figure cats is a wonderful start down this glowing highway ahead of us.

If you are wondering how this journey into glow in the dark cats began, it was actually with zombies, night-light zombies to be more specific that I made over at my other website, TeaLightBox.com.

Although tea lights are relatively easy compared to just about everything else I do here at CNCROi.com it does allow me the opportunity to play around with different materials and paints using the same model foundation so comparing results is super easy and informative to me.

I had a similar synergy when I ran CNCKing.com which I closed about a year ago to focus on this business.

It was a wonderful test bed for all sorts of design ideas and yes, it continues to live-on this site under the Buy Online / Model Kit section of CNCROi.com, check it out, it will give you an idea of how all this came about.

In the case of glow in the dark cats, I decided to use scrap quarter-inch 6 mm thick MDF, with double-sided tape in the back so I could stick it easily on just about anything after the paint dried.

If you are more into fish, CNCROi.com can make them glow in the dark just as easily as cats, dogs, giraffes or even whales… it’s completely up to you what we make that glows in the dark!

To really showcase the difference in visibility when the lights go on, I decided that it would be best to make two cats, one that’s a glow in the dark cat and the other as bright a yellow color I had in the CNCROi.com shop.

Our Trotec Speedy 400 flexx cuts out these cats in record time, the precision allows me to do direct comparisons between them (they are identical in every way) and furthermore, the double-sided tape is covering the entire back in the same silhouette as the glow in the dark cats which makes adhesion perfect on anything.

A giraffe silhouette from CNCROi.com is the same as a tea light box with a giraffe cut out, if only I can get contracts to do both at the same time!

Back to glow in the dark cats, that silhouette can be literally anything, cars, planes, symbols, letters or even plaques with corporate branding.

I decided to go with glow in the dark cats as that’s what half the internet video world is about, why not throw in my stuff into the lot as well.

These glow in the dark cats are now finished, one will glow yellow when the lights are on, the other will glow green when they go off in the CNCROi.com shop.

I don’t think the internet has ever seen such a wonderful series of glow in the dark cats, proportional and accurate down to the clumps of fur, all that’s missing is a hairball and they’d fit right in at a pet store.

Of course, if you wanted to get your cat made out of metal, which CNCROi.com can also transform into a glow in the dark kitty, we can do that just as well!

Both of these glow in the dark cats began their life under a beam of light, now it’s time to use that light to our advantage using the power of paint to give them a whole new personality.

In the CNCROi.com paint booth, you can see that the spray painting process also illuminates the grid behind the cat, it’s not everyday that you get to see the spray pattern of paint so that alone was worth a photograph.

The next glow in the dark cats up for paint was the yellow one, that’s our control, this really pop but you don’t see it when the lights go out, regardless of how many layers of bright yellow paint I apply to this cat.

This is scrap MDF, so it has a few flaws in it that only began to show-up after the paint dried but it just goes to show how bright this yellow really is, you’d think that it would have incredible visibility when the lights are low but nope, this glow in the dark cat goes dark pretty quick.

By comparison, after the paint has been charged-up, you can see that even in low light, the glow in the dark cat below just stands out incredibly against anything dark and this gets more extreme as the lights go lower.

Side by side though, you can see the glow in the dark cats are identical and both look great, the advantage with the glow in the dark is that you see it really brightly when there are no lights.
