Three new tree shapes are now available in our Shapes Library to give you an idea of what we can achieve regarding your custom application at CNCROi.com.
Plywood is a great material, its severely under rated, it paints great, it’s consistent, has a nice weight to strength ratio and best of all, it’s really quite cheap and plentiful anywhere!
This is pretty much the worse grade of plywood out there, our focus with these blog posts and demos is show you what we can do with even the bottom of the barrel stuff so that when we make something for you, it will look even more awesome as it would be done using premium materials (budget depending).
A tree has a lot of intricate details built right into them, as such, they are always a challenge when it comes to cutting them out. An easy way around them is adding two cutting paths, one not cutting through but just “marking” the intricate details and then another cutting path cutting through just a few mm or a fraction of an inch around the outer perimeter.
This keeps things strong and the results are far more striking than trying to cut out all these little details that tend to get stuck and ripped off everywhere. CNCROi.com does custom day in and out, we figure things out from experience and when it comes to fine details, this method works best.
The nice thing about our Austrian CNC laser is that we aren’t pushing or pulling through the material like we would use our industrial CNC router, as such, we can really get incredible details without a spinning bit or hold down to be account for in the design.
The detail we can achieve on just about any material that is dense enough is a thousand DPI for but for something like this, where we use cut lines to add detail rather than engraving, the resolution is within 15 nanometers of accuracy.
The smoke and soot you see settling on the plywood surface of these custom scary trees would still happen regardless of whether we masked this or not, the point in this case is just to leave it as-is so you can see that the soot can actually be used to add details to an otherwise bland surface.
In other words, the soot is a nice way to add detail and emphasize the outline of these scary trees to make them all the more scary! These could have been sanded or masked if you wanted a flat surface without any of this onto plywood or wood veneer.
There are an endless variety of materials we could have custom cut these scary trees from, Corian through Stainless Steel, Brass through laminate, polycarbonate to cardboard. Each material has a + and – regarding strength, cost, surface options (like paint filling) and weight.
As our industrial wide-format laser is able to cut a huge variety of materials, in addition to engraving them, we needed a powerful extraction system which is why we have both a vacuum table and powerful extraction system in addition to a compressed air stream coming from the head. This ensures fantastic results for our wide customer base.
When you want something custom-made, it’s generally easier for you to tell us the volume and budget if you are unsure about material to be used, this is the most efficient method of production when it comes to custom production, stencils through coasters as we can optimize your design to suit what you want at the price point you have.
In this case, the trees were actually scaled up slightly from our original drawing just to use the entire piece of scrap material we had on hand. As all these files are vector based, scaling up or down doesn’t degrade the clarity of precision of these custom scary trees.
Now that these custom trees are finished being engraved and cut, you can see how great they look, again, these could have been sanded quite easily to remove the stains but I wanted this on purpose for this demo and application.
Looking close-up, you can see the depth of the engraving, hence why sanding this wouldn’t remove these engraving lines as they are deep enough to remain even if you remove a little from the top surface.
