Happy Birthday Custom Acrylic Hangers
CNCs are wonderful tools, here at CNCROi.com, we don’t just fiber mark industrial aircraft components and hard anodized military casings. We also make birthday gifts using 6 mm thick custom acrylic hangers, that’s nicely flame polished and will last a very long time.
It’s getting repetitive but I had some material in the shop after completing a big acrylic project that needed to have something done to it and with my parent’s birthday coming-up, I put two and two together and produced custom CNC laser engraved and cut custom acrylic hangers.
The backing is left on the transparent acrylic on purpose, it protects the underside from the flames and scratches while the front is engraved and cut.
I had a piece of acrylic that was too long to fit on the bed and I didn’t feel like using the passthrough ability of our Austrian Trotec Speedy 400 flexx industrial wide format laser so I just popped the front in, cut the first hanger then with that “scrap” able to fit the rest into the laser.
The process of making these custom acrylic hangers, which are incredibly strong as I designed them myself based on earlier prototypes that needed a bit more beefing-up, is a straight forward process.
The advantage of being able to feed material through either the front or back of the CNC laser is huge, in this case, I didn’t have to cut the acrylic sheet to size to fit in my machine, this means a lot less wastage as I was able to fit these hanger designs in a mirrored fashion for optimal material usage.
The cutting process using a CNC laser, as opposed to using our CNC router is the flame polishing you get on the edges, this could have just as easily been engraved and cut using a bit but the laser does a better job of it.
After the initial engraving of this acrylic board, the top was line engraved followed by cutting out the inside then outside. Each custom acrylic hanger is perfect and identical.
After taking it off the bed and removing the backing, you can see how clearly the engraving comes out. We could have used any font, acrylic color or thickness but I’ve found that transparent looks best for most applications as it suits the colors of any company.
The process behind custom acrylic hangers is relatively simple and the cutting process even easier, using a skilled and experienced CNC laser operator and designer means many of the problems on both the design and machine function side just don’t show-up.
Looking at the custom acrylic hangers edge-on, you can see how well the flame polish comes out. These hangers could have been made using a host of materials by the way, from stainless steel and aluminum to Corian, laminate or even wood. The difference?
Budget, these acrylic hangers aren’t cheap, wood would have been far more cost effective, but the results look fantastic and it weighs a lot less than Corian or 3M dibond which we could have also done these in.
Looking at these in a few different angles, having transparent custom acrylic hangers look cool! Does acrylic scratch over time? Yes, but I doubt cloths will wear out this hanger much less scratch it a lot over time.
These are not your typical light weighted hangers either, they have a nice heft to them, which to me, is perfect for heavy winter cloths as it prevents things from bending. These are SOLID customer hangers.
