We make a lot of name badges across various materials, metals through woods, plastics through whatever our customers send us. Today, we’ll CNC laser engrave and cut an unmasked plywood name badge.
We had a scrap piece of plywood from another project so as with all our other name badges, we’ll use this as a way of showing you what the results look like compared to our other options on CNCROi.com when it comes to custom name badges.
Laser engraving plywood, veneers or any other material is just about always the same, the settings may change slightly depending on material density and design but overall, engraving one material is very close to engraving another one.
The smoke you see coming-up from the custom plywood name badge are bits of wood and resin that have been vaporised. The challenge with plywood over veneer, is that you can’t really sand it as the top surface doesn’t work its way all the way down, this means you see that sanding has occurred.
This is generally why we make custom name badges out of solid veneer instead as the results are more predictable and it looks better overall.
We had one client that was a plywood manufacturer so in that case, you bet, their custom plywood name badges were done out of the off-cuts produced during manufacturing and they looks great. We put a magnet on the back and the client was very happy with the results.
Plywood also has glue in it where, depending on the grade and finish of the surface, becomes challenging to remove as even when protective masking is applied, the smoke still makes its way underneath and as a result, sanding is required which doesn’t always come-out great.
In the case of this custom plywood name badge, you can see how we vaporized off the first player of ply and show the second layer underneath. You can also see the pattern of smoke going from the bottom up, this is due to several factors but the major one being our extraction system.
In this case, the results aren’t bad, making will help tremendously on the resin settling on the surface but compared to the ease of wood veneer, it’s more work to use plywood for this particular application than alternative materials.
When it comes to plywood, like that of our customer, smooth and consistent ply comes out dramatically better than this, which has a very thin surface ply. Having plys that are similar in material as well come out better, meaning having it without high-contrasting wood layers such as what you see in this custom plywood name badge.
