Log & Live Edge Projects: FAQ
For our 350th CNCROi.com video, I thought I’d review some of the log and live edge projects I’ve showcased through the 3+ years since founding, it’s always fun working with a natural material as distinctive and full of character regardless of what we do with it.
What I especially like about log & live edge projects is how many applications they can be used for, from wedding anniversaries to unique novelty birthday items, the timelessness of wood is perfect in either raw rustic or polished looks.
What gives log & live edge projects their unique flare is that no two grain patterns, material density or distribution of things like knots are the same, it’s really hard to screw-up a project made out of wood as unlike just about any other material, the natural beauty just shines straight through any material “defects”.

Our most popular woods for live edge and log work are Pine, Walnut, Maple and Cedar, each has their own advantages and this is reflected in the finished product that our customers receive.
With logs and live edge, there is no right or wrong way of working with them, just about any design fits perfectly onto it and what’s even better, it can be resanded and finished repeatedly over the lifetime of the project.
With real wood, there are no fads, or fashion trends, it’s just wood and that alone puts it in a class of its own when it comes to making custom products out of it, furniture through plaques to commemorate special events and occasions.
As the laser doesn’t have a two-way feedback mechanism, the vaporizing follows the contours of the wood grain, so denser material engraves less deep than lighter density which just accentuates the natural variation in the wood.
As you can see, there are no two live edge slabs that are the same, whether you like the one in the top, the bottom of the middle of the picture below, they all have something distinctive and unique to them that appeal to different people.
