Long Weekend Fun! Eiffel Tower for World Maker Faire 2014

It’s the long weekend, the shop is empty and there is the smell of smoke in the air. Why? Well, its model making time! I’ll be attending the World Maker Faire New York in a few weeks (http://makerfaire.com) as an exhibitor and I needed something to demonstrate to people.

The Eiffel Tower I designed a little while back for CNCKing.com fit the bill perfectly – it looks awesome, has a great amount of detail and best of all, it’s easy to assemble. It’s so well designed that you don’t even need glue to keep most of it together so strong that it can be pushed down on and not fall apart!

The model cutting process went extremely well as did the build – I built this model to have many interlocking segments so that you end-up with a rigid structure. I also optimized the model so that putting it together was intuitive, there is nothing worse than looking down at a bunch of almost identical parts and trying to figure-out which is which.

I’m continually impressed at how fantastic my Trotec Speedy 400 flexx is – one moment marking part numbers on aerospace components or annealing stainless steel tags and the next, cutting a wooden Eiffel Tower! That’s awesome versatility!

Thankfully, the long weekend isn’t over yet, I still have a whole other day to make a bunch more models for Maker Faire – will be a blast! Here is a picture of the model partially constructed without any glue so you get an idea of scale. The bed it’s sitting on is a meter by 60 cm. This Eiffel Tower was cut out of 3 mm MDF hardboard.
