Paint Filled Live Edge House Number Sign
No house is complete without a paint filled live edge house number sign made by CNCROi.com!
This paint filled live edge house number sign was a fun project, it’s the biggest house number sign using wood that CNCROi.com has made thus far and using live edge gave it a bit more complexity to deal with as it wasn’t flat (due by its very nature, being live edge).
So the first step to both flatten the working surface and clean-up the aging that happened on the paint filled live edge house number sign was to flatten the surface by removing about a quarter-inch off the top.
If you want your custom-house number sign to be made out of Corian instead of live edge or wood, that’s no problem for CNCROi.com, we make what you want using the material you desire.
Thanks to our massive live edge clearing bit, we made quick work and wow can you see the difference that resurfacing makes on live edge!
Resurfacing the soon to be paint filled live edge house number sign gave it a whole new life, you can now easily see the grain pattern and being a lighter wood, it will make the information about to be engraved and paint filled into it dramatically easier to see thanks to the increased contrast.
Custom house number signs can be made using a variety of processes and machines, from Cedar to Oak, square to rounded, live edge to lumber, CNCROi.com can make a sign just for you however you want it.
Resurfacing the live edge board does take time, but it’s well worth it and CNCROi.com has done A LOT of this type of work since acquiring our ShopBot PRSAlpha, it’s an amazing machine for this type of work that does the work in an hour that would take days to do otherwise by hand.
Looking edge-on, you can clearly see how much of a difference the resurfacing has on the wood, after this process is complete, there is a very nice and polished surface to work from BUT before we start the carving and paint filling, it needs to be sanded so that it’s incredibly smooth for maximum mask adhesion.
After the sanding, you can see how beautiful the wood has become, the very faint lines that are introduced by the bit cutting out the surface are gone and the natural beauty of the wood really reflects amazingly in the light… the perfect surface for CNCROi.com to carve into!
CNCROi.com can also laser engrave live edge, having multiple CNC machines allows us to make just about anything and mix and match optimal processes for the best result you could ever get!
Making the paint filled live edge house number sign is important, I don’t plan on spending hours with a paint brush filling in the carving made by our industrial CNC router, just spraying it in, as such, a mask is vitally important to save on a lot of time and making sure the paint goes where it’s suppose to and not where it wants to.
Before painting the paint filled live edge house number sign though, we first need to carve THROUGH the masking into the smooth surface to reveal the information we want to be paint filled..
This is a serious plank of live edge, as such, making sure it doesn’t move from the surfacing to the carving is vitally important, that’s why those wooden blocks are all around the live edge, making sure there is zero play as this would reveal itself immediately when doing the carving.
If you prefer your house number signs to be out of solid metal or Corian, CNCROi.com can do that too for you, here’s an example using a mix of plywood and very thick metal.
Just for fun, I decided to use two different bits to do this paint filled live edge house number sign, the bigger one was used to save time on the Daniel and Vanessa and the smaller one for the address below it, that’s why you see some ripping on the top and none at the bottom.
One bit was an upspiral, meaning it lifts the material OUT during production and the smaller one was a straight bit, meaning it just cuts straight into the material without any direction for the wood chips produced during the carving aspect of the paint filled live edge house number sign production.
Live everything else at CNCROi.com, I’m entirely self-taught, so while making projects, I like to experiment not only with different bits but also settings to see what the result will look like, especially for such a paint filled live edge house number sign, it’s an opportunity to triple check my thinking!
The masking is easily cleaned-up so all that lifting was only happening on the edge, not the overall masking, as such, it was now time to wrap the entire live edge plank measuring roughly 6 ft x 2 ft so that the paint would ONLY go into the carving, not under the plank, on the edges or onto the bark.
CNCROi.com has flattened a lot of live edge, here’s one of our bigger pieces that will be used for a table, in this case, it was levelled on both sides while the paint filled live edge house number sign was done onto just one side as it will be fixed on a wall.
Masking the soon to be paint filled live edge house number sign is just as much fun as all the other processes CNCROi.com has done onto this sign, spending time doing this NOW saves a tremendous amount of time in clean-up later if I didn’t mask this live edge plank.
Although this is a flat black enamel paint, multiple colors could have just as easily been applied, but nothing beats black with live edge in order to produce the ultimate contrast needed for a house number sign.
After drying, the finished paint filled live edge house number sign looks amazing!
