Rectangle Rivet-On Tags: Fiber Laser Etched
CNCROi.com makes custom rectangle rivet-on tags using a variety of specs, in this case, it’s 0.02″ thick 304 stainless steel with holes in each corner for, yes, riveting.

In a market flooded with generic products, personalization is the key to standing out. Custom rectangle rivet-on tags made to spec by CNCROi.com provide a unique opportunity to infuse your brand’s personality into every item you produce.
We have a variety of lasers in the shop, but for this specific project, the galvo fiber laser was the clear winner for the fiber etching that was to happen on these custom rectangle rivet-on tags.
We can literally fiber laser etch just about anything on these stainless steel tags, any mix of images, text and anything else you can imagine are no problem for CNCROi.com.
CNCROi.com employs a variety of techniques to make our custom tags, including using our plasma cutter and waterjet.

These custom rectangle rivet-on tags are actually a production run over-run, as mentioned in my video, when we do projects requiring lots of custom tags, it always pays huge dividends to make a bunch of extras as sometimes down the line, the customer needs “just a few more” and having them in stock without having to restart the wheel makes turnaround a snap.
The other advantage of having a large selection of custom blank stainless steel tags (in this case) is that when we have rush jobs or customers wanting something a little different, we already have them in stock to turning it around is FAST for CNCROi.com customers!
These custom rectangle rivet-on tags are being fiber laser etched, meaning, what you see on them will not fade, crack or peel over time, it’s a permanent branding method that’s great in literally any environment.
CNCROi.com also does a lot of work with anodized aluminium, there are truly endless options when it comes to making custom tags by us.

The production run of these custom rectangle rivet-on tags for this customer was pretty straight forward, we had the blanks in stock, so it was just a matter of etching then shipping them out from CNCROi.com – the extra step of sourcing the metal, waiting delivery, cutting it to size and shape… were all skipped!
This might seem like a strange set-up, but I’ve been using Lego for YEARS to help make quick jigs for a variety of projects on just about all my machines except for the plasma cutter, that would melt the plastic.
Want a quick and repeatable jig that’s endlessly flexible, Lego is the way at least at CNCROi.com, for larger production runs, I of course make fully customized jigs to spec but for relatively simple and repeatable projects like these custom rectangle rivet-on tags, this was the best way forward.
Regardless of your metal spec requirements for your own custom tags, CNCROi.com can produce them and ship them right to your door.
CNCROi.com can also deep etch stainless steel, this is something we do quite a bit of, though you need a thicker plate to lessen the probability of warping from the heat generated during the process.

The unique thing about fiber laser etching, or just about any laser we use at CNCROi.com, is that it’s a contact-free process, meaning, there is nothing that ever touches the tag, it’s just energy being thrown onto the surface of the tag and then etching happens, you never see the laser beam.
If you look at the photos, you’ll notice the vent in the back of the galvo, I installed this myself at CNCROi.com because the fiber etching process produces gases that are most likely not very healthy to be breathing in, I don’t think lungs are made to inhale vaporized stainless steel.
The total number of custom rectangle rivet-on tags CNCROi.com etched in this production run was 15, not a huge run, but still cost-effective because we already had the tags made, otherwise, the cost would be several factors higher because we can’t buy a small piece of metal cost-effectively, we can’t cut just a few small things cost-effectively due to all the set-up required and, well, etching is etching, that isn’t really affected.
The bright light you see during the fiber etching process on these custom rectangle rivet-on tags at CNCROi.com is just the reaction of the energy hitting the tag, it also produces a sound that’s similar to what you hear when welding, though the results are very different.
CNCROi.com is not limited to only etching stainless steel, we can also cut it out and THEN etch it!

The really nice thing about fiber laser etching is that it can produce infinitely fine details and although the process is slow, it more than makes-up for it in accuracy and clarity.
Here are the finished fiber laser etched custom rectangle rivet-on tags, they look amazing but as this is stainless steel, it’s very hard to properly photograph and video these finished tags.
The dead giveaway that these custom rectangle rivet-on tags were stamped, now that you can clearly see it, is the holes in the corner, notice the slight bending around the hole? I do this at the shop using a manual punch but if the production run is large enough, then I’ll laser, plasma or waterjet cut the holes out to save me time.
The reason why I often keep stock of holed and unholed tags is because sometimes customers don’t want holes, and adding holes to a tag after a hole was made isn’t much fun, or they want bigger or holes in different locations.
