September 1st: Custom Silhouette Time!
Essentially anything can become a custom silhouette then used for a huge variety of products from custom rubber stamps to stencils and other products. At the end of the day, CNCROi.com spends a lot of time cutting 2D silhouettes, sure the materials and thicknesses are different but whether we make them or our customers provide them, we cut them!
With all the materials, equipment and expertise we have here at the shop, there is a tremendous capability that’s still difficult for many visitors to our website to convey. People see a bank and then a coaster, then a key chain then a wall mural… to me, they are all the same but to others, it’s confusing.
My goal from now until the end of the year is to try to meld all this together and I think the easiest method to do so is by showcasing and building-up a custom silhouette shape business on CNCROi.com.
Nothing is easier to understand than a flat 2D object so I want to use that to showcase what’s possible and what kind of project we can do with such simple and humble beginnings across a vast array of applications. For instance, due to our design flexibility, if you wanted a turtle to be the size of your table, or actually, become a table, we can do that!
Alternatively, if you wanted some simple custom stickers to stick on the wall, being completely process, material and design agnostic, we can totally do that too! There are just so many simple applications for the work that we do routinely in the shop, that I want to try to expose people to what’s truly possible even with very limited resources or concepts and ideas.
For instance, the whitewood Egyptian coin bank I designed and cut out is INCREDIBLY SIMPLE, yet very effective. If you wanted this to be in the shape of anything else, the system is really straight forward to replicate on-demand but can also be taken one step further.
Think a corporate logo, most are 2D shapes as well, it can be transformed into custom furniture, cutting boards, door frames, wall panels – it’s pretty incredible what can be accomplished beyond just an awesome massive custom stamp!
If you take a step back and review the almost 400 blog posts I’ve done showcasing project ideas here on CNCROi.com, it’s quite impressive how long these have held-up and haven’t aged. Essentially, just like an institutional logo or anything else we take for granted in our daily lives, things don’t really age unless they are jumping after fads.
We’ve engraved custom rocks that could easily be built-up into indoor waterfalls, we’ve designed custom auxiliary tables for the shop to better produce high quality results for our customers and we’ve pushed a lot of creative boundaries. I hope you get an idea of how much can be made from even the simplest custom silhouette.
Being completely self-taught, I don’t know what isn’t possible, I never received that part of the educational process where something is difficult or unachievable. You want a wooden, metal or laminate XYZ, I can figure out how to make it happen though there are limits when it comes to materials, a fantastic design is only as good as the materials used to create it and the application it’s intended to fulfill.
The part I enjoy most though, for our customers, is the spontaneous creativity that happens when you mix what we can do with the needs our customers have. For instance, we work with designers all the time trying new things for their clients and we are at the forefront when it comes to consulting as to how to achieve the best result for a given timeline or budget or across whatever material limitation.
I get to meet fantastic manufacturers who want metal plates but up until this period of time, they’ve been unhappy with what they have been provided and one step further, challenged to find better solutions to their custom one-off or multi-cycle production lines. So, one day (or part of a day), we are doing a production run of machine plates and then, afterwards, making custom shields and then later, custom cake toppers or acrylic wedding invitations. It’s all across the map!
It’s this incredible diversity that makes each and every day and weekend or late night fun. Our customers need something, we can make it for them, and that custom piece of whatever it is, brings joy and appreciation that’s tough to beat compared to anything else they could have purchased.
CNCROi.com isn’t just part of a production cycle, it’s also part of individual events and lives. We made a bunch of custom table number stands last month that were pretty impressive with awesome corporate branding and the design was just amazing – nope, you won’t see it on our site – but other items that I do share I hope convey our capabilities more thoroughly.
