Solid Oak Name Badges
Solid oak name badges are really a lot of fun to make, in this case, CNCROi.com made them for the Scouts, a group I was a member of in my childhood.
Since I got a planner and an industrial bandsaw, I’ve been able to make my own wood using scrap or given wood which saves my customers a lot of money and also gives what I make with them, in this case, solid oak name badges, a more interesting story to share with you.
In this case, I had some solid oak planks which were taken down during a home renovation, so they had a solid varnish on one side and a few nail holes here and there that I only discovered after running them through the planner a few times.
As this project called for 1/8th” or 3 mm thick solid oak name badges, this half-inch had to be split in two and then run through the planner, cleaning both sides and making it all silky smooth in the process.
As you can see, the story behind these custom solid oak name badges is already more interesting than the typical “buy 1/8th veneer at the lumber store, cut and ship.”
Now that both sides of these reclaimed oak planks are cleaned-up and smooth, they are ready for their migration from our wood shop to our laser department where our Austrian industrial CNC laser lives and works!
A protective mask is added to the oak planks and if you are wondering why, watch this CNCROi.com video about how I made a domino set without using it!
In no time at all, we’ll have a full assortment of personalized and customized solid oak name badges using reclaimed and still very beautiful wood!
I noticed afterwards the irony of using CNCROi.com‘s CNC laser to engraving an oak log onto reclaimed oak using equipment that’s eons beyond the axe in the picture.
The process of CNC laser engraving the solid oak name badges and then cutting them out is flawless, the variation you see between the badges is actually caused by different grain patterns and textures, so not only is the name different on each one but so is the look and feel as well!
That’s what I love about using solid wood over plywood or other materials, it just has a presence, even at 1/8th” or 3 mm thick that doing the same thing out of lamacoids just doesn’t have.
But as I tell my customers, each material has a reason for being, wood is wonderful but not for every application, I myself have 4 custom name badges made from different materials which are customized to suit the people I meet-up with.
These solid oak name badges are now taking shape wonderfully, the oak is now all engraved and in the process of being CNC laser cut within 5 nanometers of accuracy.
When it comes to making custom name badges and name tags, CNCROi.com has a huge amount of experience, whether it’s lamacoids, metals or wood (or Corians), we can make really amazing badges that suit just about any occasion.
Additionally, CNCROi.com can go as traditional or as nuts design wise as you wish, that’s total flexibility for your organization!
Here’s the first of two batches of solid oak name badges being produced in this run, you can see the smoke and resin on the surface of the mask, which is easily removed.
And why I use it here in the shop so much, look, NO SANDING!
It’s a little different looking than our CNCROi.com solid oak name badge, which you can see i this video, it’s all got to do with the finish of the wood after production!
Now it’s time for the next batch of solid oak name badges, I did this in two batches just to make filming and photography easier, in a production setting, we take full advantage of our gigantic production bed.
The process of laser engraving and cutting solid oak name badges is the exact same, only the names and titles are different.
CNC laser engraving is performed first to keep everything in place, afterwards, they can be cut with total accuracy and repeatability.
Making custom to spec solid oak name badges is really a lot of fun, that could have been any wood species by the way, and if you wanted a matching plaque (same wood or different), no problem either!
You want it made out of Red Cedar (smells awesome), that’s no problem either, CNCROi.com works within your budgets, design limitations and wants to make what you require for us to make for you within spec.
And that includes using varnishes, resins and stains to achieve the look you want, but I have to admit, Oak, Pine and Cedar are my favorite woods to use here in the shop.
CNCROi.com can also make custom coasters to match whatever look and feel you have us make for you product wise, so if you wanted custom oak name badges with custom oak coasters with a design that matches a custom rubber stamp etc… no problem!
It has been a while since CNCROi.com has produced an Oak coaster demo, I’ll have to add that to my never-ending list of fun videos and blogs to produce.
Here’s a group shot of all the custom solid oak name badges with their masking on, you can see the stains and the smoke where the engraving and cutting occurred.
And yes, CNCROi.com has also made custom bookmarks using oak planks in the past as well.
And here they are all done, if you have a very good eye, you could probably match-up the grain patterns so you’d know which plank and their order within the solid oak plank they came from, each is totally unique and they all look wonderful!
Oak is also better than pine when it comes to custom name badges too, it’s a stronger wood, it’s denser so details come out better and is generally more durable with a little more weight to it.
One of the scouts had the same first name as me, so I took advantage of that to show you, there is a natural shine with oak that, when finished, really makes it pop quite dramatically.
